Loving husband trying to save his wife from the imaginary cage she has locked herself up in.

Actress Saritha comes to a small town to talk to Vaishali, because she is about to play her in a film based on her life. Vaishali suffers from hysteria and angrily shuts out Saritha. The story is now told in flashback form, when Vaishali's brother tells Saritha about her marriage to Kumar, lasting for only 47 days. Kumar takes Vaishali to a country manor in a town 30 km away from Paris, France (Férolles). She does not know French or English. Kumar already has a French first wife Lucie living there on the top floor. He deceives both his wives: He tells Vaishali that Lucy is a friend, while he tells Lucy that Vaishali is his sister. Eventually, Vaishali figures out his bigamy and wishes not to stay with him as his second wife/ mistress. She does not know of anyone who knows her language and who can help her escape.

The movie revolves around the trials and tribulations of Anu (Sujatha). Anu is a happy-go-lucky girl who is in love with her boyfriend. Her life changes when her father gets transferred to Mumbai (then Bombay). Her love life falls apart as she gets no response to any of her letters from her love. In addition, her father becomes seriously ill. Her father's office colleague, Ramanathan (Rajnikanth), becomes the new pillar of support for her in these tough times. Soon, he asks for her hand in marriage. She accepts gratefully, and confesses that she had a boyfriend, who has seemingly forgotten her. However, she soon realizes that Ramanathan is a sadistic and jealous husband, who tortures her no end so she opts for a divorce. As a divorced woman, with an infant in her hands, she lands in Chennai (Madras) to take up a new job and start a new life. Her life takes a turn for the better in Chennai with a very supportive friend-group in her office, particularly a widower, Janardhan a.k.a Johnnie (Kamal Hassan)who is a talented ventriloquist talking through his puppet, Junior. He falls in love with Anu, but is unable to muster up the courage to tell her about it. In an interesting cinematic twist, her ex-husband's mother discovers her presence in the city and takes up a job as a maid in her house. Anu also stumbles upon her old lover in Chennai and discovers that her letters to him never reached as they were intercepted by his mentally-challenged sister. Soon, Anu renews her relationship with her old love and life seems to be looking up for her. But the ghosts of the past continue to haunt her. Ramanathan comes to Chennai in the role of her boss - a contrite and repentant Ramanathan, who now wants to re-marry Anu and redress the wrongs he had done. The situation becomes piquant with 3 men vying for Anu - her ex-love, her ex-husband and a silent lover lurking on the sidelines. —Anonymous

Drama and melodrama follow two relationships involving single parents. Prasanna (Kamal Haasan) is nursed back to health after a bloody fight by singer Bhairavi (Srividya). The two are slowly drawn to each other and they decide to marry inspite of their age gap, and a past relationship she is still unextricably tied to. In the meantime, Prasanna's father (Sundarrajan) embarks on a relationship with a younger girl Ranjini (Jayasudha). Both relationships are given a new twist by the addition of an unexpected new variable. A couple of daring concepts thrown in, but too much of the standard tamil film melodrama and reliance on fabulous coincidences. —Joyojeet Pal

When a Brahmin family finds diminishing monetary opportunities in traditional priestly functions, the daughter must go out and work. Lalitha, the eldest daughter of a Brahmin family, is saddled with the responsibility of supporting her family, led by a father who witlessly procreates to a robust size of 10 household members. As poverty gets worse, Lalitha must turn to desperate measures to keep the food coming. Interesting comment on gender, tradition, and the caste crisis, slightly bold for its time. Lalitha's doctor-wannabe kid-brother also figures in the story.
