Dev Narayan (Alok Nath) lives with his daughter Laxmi (Aruna Irani) and her children (Radha & Prashant). He also looks after two orphans, Gopal (Shahrukh Khan) and Nita (Suman Ranganathan). When he refuses to pay for Laxmi's husband Ramnath (who is an alcoholic and a gambler) who must be operated, she leaves the house with her children. Ramnath dies. Laxmi spots and takes in an orphaned boy Suraj. Her daughter Radha (Madhuri Dixit) forms a sisterly bond with him, named Suraj (Salman Khan). Suraj, a famous and popular singer is grateful to Radha for contributing to his success by her support. Gopal is now a rich businessman. Mona is Gopal's assistant, who wears skimpy clothes and tries to seduce Gopal. Gopal is ultra conservative in his views and doesn't like her behavior. Laxmi dies in an accident (while she was coming in an auto to meet Dev, who was also on his death bed). Dev survives and Radha and Prashant are taken to live with Gopal and Nita. Gopal (Shahrukh Khan) has been in love with Radha (Madhuri Dixit) ever since they were children. As adults, Gopal proposes to Radha and she accepts. Radha goes to invite Suraj to the wedding and finds out that he had an accident and has lost his voice. When it comes to Suraj, Radha forgets everything, even Gopal. Turns out Suraj was playing a prank and Gopal sees first hand the bond between Suraj and Radha. wedding happens. Radha tells she loves Laxmi and Prashant only. Gopal is hurt as she didn't mention him. Gopal wants to be intimate with Radha, but in the joint family setup he is frequently interrupted, leading to sexual frustration. There are two things Gopal disapproves of, after their marriage: Radha's unemployed younger brother Prashant (Atul Agnihotri) who lives with them, and Suraj (Salman Khan), Radha's childhood friend. He doesn't like that Radha is always on the phone with Suraj (even when they are just about to have sex). Gopal plans to take Radha to Switzerland to be away from the family. But Suraj was headed there for a business meeting and Radha invites him to join them. Gopal changes his destination without telling Suraj to enjoy some peace and quiet. Suraj is quite handsome and a very famous singer. Radha, who is very fond of him, talks to him quite often on the phone. The hardworking Gopal, who loves his wife dearly, wants complete attention from her. When he feels Radha gives undue attention to her friend Suraj, he grows gradually very suspicious (He touches her freely, changes shirts in front of her and she gives Gopal's shirts to him) and believes that Radha and Suraj are secretly seeing each other (they talk on the phone when GOpal leaves for office). Prashant needed some cash to buy a 2nd hand motorbike. Gopal finds cash missing from his wallet and admonishes Prashant for taking it by himself, without permission. Prashant protests, but Gopal is in no mood to listen. Turns out Nita took the money for her college fees. Radha asks Prashant to fix the bathroom light. When he is in there, Nita comes for a bath and Prashant covers his eyes, but says nothing. Nita finds out when the bath is complete and complains to Gopal. Gopal hits Prashant and throws him out of the house. Radha laments her woes to Suraj and asks him to take care of Prashant. Gopal overhears this conversation and feels bad. Radha and Gopal visit Suraj's song recording and Gopal has a dream about Radha dancing with Suraj on his song. Gopal throws Radha out of the house after his jealousy completely overwhelms him. Radha-- though she deeply loves her husband-- has never fully understood the turmoil he is going through. On Radha's Bday, Suraj hosts a party and invites Gopal to it. Gopal is outraged. She receives a notice of divorce from him and is devastated. Prashant and Suraj want to talk to Gopal, but Radha forbids it. Finally, Suraj arranges to meet Gopal, who arrives with a loaded gun. Suraj is taken aback upon finding that his platonic relationship with his best friend Radha has caused Gopal such misunderstanding. They argue and Gopal finally leaves. Suraj talks to Radha, but she thinks it is entirely her fault. If she had understood that her husband disapproved of her close relationship to her friend, she would have never seen Suraj again. Suraj leaves Radha and promises to never see her again. He talks to his blind girlfriend Suman (Aishwarya Rai, in a cameo) about what has happened. Suman finally talks reason into Gopal. Once he realizes his misapprehensions and the purity of Radha's heart, he leaves to Suraj's house to take his wife back home. At the moment Radha tries to commit suicide through sleeping pills, Gopal arrives and stops her just in time. They make up and visit Suraj on the set of his latest stage show. Gopal apologizes to Suraj, and everything ends on a happy note.

She, like the rest of the village, is constantly terrorized by Gajendra and Virender, 2 misogynistic brothers who own most of the village. Her pride and joy, her educated son, shares a forbidden love with Gajendra's daughter, Sushma. Eventually, Vaidehi takes refuge with a bandit named Bulwa, who takes the Mother Goddess as his matron and respects women, and considers Gajendra and Virender his archenemies. Arjun's sister, Seema (Raveena Tandon), is in love with Pyare. Arjun has no female companion and some petty comments are made about his age. Zorawar (Paresh Rawal) runs a business smuggling arms and diamonds, under a cover of being a statue maker. Once, in a hotel, he discovers that he is being spied upon and along with the cop spying on him, he wants to gets rid of Madhu (Divya Dutta), an eyewitness but she escapes. Madhu heads straight to the police station and gives her statement to Arjun and Pyare. Pyare drops her home. That night Zorawar attacks Madhu inside her home. Madhu's friend, Neha (Ramya Krishnan), witnesses Madhu's murder. Scared, and with the gangsters after her, she calls the police station and asks for Pyare, but since he is not there, Arjun is asked to go to her, and masquerade as Pyare, who had been described as a very good person to Neha by her dead friend. In a considerable amount of confusion, he takes her to Pyare's house and even gets to the extent of asking Pyare to masquerade as Arjun. For a few days Arjun decides to stay at Pyare's apartment, as Pyare. While Pyare is asked to stay at Arjun's house to protect his family. Arjun starts to fall in love with Neha. Zorawar and his men attack Neha, but Arjun and Pyare team up to rescue her, but Zorawar manages to escape. Neha runs into Seema at a mall and it emerges that they both love Pyare. They complain to the police commissioner and it emerges that Arjun was being Pyare to Neha to gain her trust. Two petty thieves, Bade Miyan (Amitabh Bachchan) and Chote Miyan (Govinda), who are look-alike of Arjun and Pyare respectively, arrive in town. Confusion ensue when every crime the crooks commit are blamed on Arjun and Pyare. Things goes further downhill when Shyamlal (Anupam Kher), the police commissioner, is also thrashed by the doubles (Shyamlal had found Bade and Chote in a red light area and was stopping them as he thought they were Arjun and Pyare. Bade and Chote thrashed him badly). Arjun and Pyare are blamed for messing up security operation of Madhuri Dixit (herself). Arjun and Pyare are asked to meet Madhuri to register an underworld complaint, but Bade and Chote meet her accidentally and are taken for Arjun/Pyare. Both are kicked when they both proposition Madhuri for marriage. Even Seema and Neha mistake Bade and Chote for Arjun and Pyare. Neha finds Bade at the jewelers (where he has just been handed the necklace that Arjun ordered for Seema's Bday) and brings him home. Chote follows him home. Arjun reaches the Jewellers later and finds the necklace is missing. Later Bade and Chote realize that they are copy cats of 2 police officers. They are deputed by commissioner to protect the other half of the Kohinoor diamond which is on display in India in a museum. When Chote and Bade find out, they pose as police to inspect the museums security under office Hamak Jaykar (Asrani). Hamak shows Chote and Bade all security measures and ways to defeat it. Arjun and Pyare are directly blamed for the theft. Zorawar wanted to smuggle this diamond and hence is pissed when the news of theft is published. Arjun and Pyare further land in trouble when Zorawar kidnaps Seema and asks for the diamond and Neha in return. Zorawar confronts Bade and Chote for the return of the diamond and parade Seema in front of them. Bade and Chote want to buy time and agree to bring Neha to him and leave the diamond with Zorawar to keep Seema safe. Arjun and Pyare, who have been arrested, are saved by the arrival of Bade and Chote, and promise to get Neha and Seema back. Bade and Chote arrive at Zorawar's hideout and stall them while Arjun and Pyare come with police force and everyone at the hideout is arrested. The crooks leave after apologizing to Neha and Seema for the confusion. However, some of Zorawar's men hijack the police van which is taking Zorawar and his associates to jail. They are stopped on the way by Bade and Chote, asking for a lift. The latter realizes who really are in the van and proceed to badly thrash Zorawar and his men and return him to jail. Arjun and Pyare are criticized for their mistake regarding the hijacking of the van and the two crooks are given a job in the police force by the commissioner himself. The film ends with Arjun and Pyare ending up being demoted to the post of traffic police officers and Bade and Chote taking their place as police inspectors.

Three women in a Bihar village are sentenced to death by their menfolk. Their crime is that they dared to protest. Ketki (Madhuri Dixit), an educated young girl with dreams in her eyes, gets married into a family of upper class landlords, whose fortunes have been consumed by lethargy and extravagance. Her husband Vinay Singh (Ayub Khan) has no agricultural land left, does not have the capital to start a business, and fails to secure a job due to the governments policy of reservation for the backward castes. Ketki makes sacrifices to support him in his entrepreneurial endeavours. But fails to restrain him when, in desperation to get rich quick, he aligns with the wrong people. Contractor and power broker Tirpat (Mohan Joshi) and local politician Pandey (Harish Patel) make use of Vinay's innocence for their own profit. Vinay's degeneration is complete when he thrashes Ketki for objection to his misdeeds. Her upbringing, self-respect and righteousness make it difficult for her to bear this humiliation. She suffers. Chandravati (Shabana Azmi) is the wife of Vinay's elder brother Abhay Singh (Mohan Agashe). Greedy for the wealth and political clout of the local temple, Abhay Singh masterminds the murder of the temple head and gets himself ordained as his successor. This entails renouncing the world and deserting his wife, which he cruelly does, citing her childlessness. The truth is that Chandravati has shielded her husband's impotence for seventeen years and now suddenly finds herself in the ignominious position of an abandoned woman. Several social, moral and mythological images have been created to indoctrinate women with the virtue of sacrifice and submissiveness. They must conform to these role models. However, circumstances force the women in Mrityudand to break these rules and make their own. This cannot be tolerated as the Society finds its maleness threatened, and the men, putting aside their own bloodthirsty conflicts, unite to teach the women a lesson. The three women are branded evil and sentenced to death. But when the men come to carry out the Death Sentence, there is a silent but massive rebellion which they are not prepared for.

Professionally qualified as a lawyer, Somen lives a wealthy lifestyle with his mom, Parvati, and dad, Dharam Bhushan, who presides over the town of Shripuri as an upper caste Hindu Priest. This is where he meets with Kajri and both rekindle their romance. Somen returns home, convinces his mom initially to approve of Kajri, and is pleasantly surprised to find that even his dad has given his approval. On the day of the marriage, Somen's world is turned upside down when his dad accuses Kajri of being a woman of ill repute as well as an unwed mother. Balakram makes a living selling dolls. Sahibaan is in love with a homeless laborer, Gopi (Rishi Kapoor), who lives near temples and eats whatever the villagers give him. Gopi plays a melodious tune on his flute, which attracts Sahibaan to him. Gopi works as a shepherd to earn some money for his sustenance. Sahibaan is childish in her behavior and doesn't realize that she is a grown woman now. Sahibaan is 18 years old but insists that her father carries her on his shoulders and plays marbles with the children of the village. Gopi admonishes her and one day she falls into a river. Gopi looks at her water drenched body and sends her home. Gopi is very afraid of the water and says that he doesn't know how to swim. That day she grows up, throws her marbles away and starts helping her mother around the house. Sahibaan learns to cook food and sew clothes as well. She expresses her love to Gopi, who accepts. The area is ruled by ruthless killer, alcoholic and womanizer Kunwar Vijay Pal Singh (Sanjay Dutt). He is sympathetic towards the poor and has a rivalry with the landlord of the nearby province Tikka (Kiran Kumar). Tikka is considered ruthless towards his workers and Vijay stands up to him and his goons and fights for the rights of his village's workers. Vijay increases the daily wages for his workers from Rs 1.5/day to Rs 3/day. Due to this all of Tikka's workers come to work for Vijay and this enrages Tikka. Tikka forcibly takes the workers back to him lumber mills by whipping them and torturing their families. In retaliation, Vijay kills one of Tikka's supervisors. Mrs Tikka (Beena Banerjee) & Tikka's sister Rajkumari Razee (Sonu Walia) live with Tiika. Every night Vijay ravishes a new prostitute and sends her away the next morning. Tikka sends an assassin to Kill Vijay, but Vijay kills him instead. Tikka bribes Inspector (Mangal Dhillon) to open a murder investigation against Vijay. Inspector tries to get Vijay's fingerprints on his gun, in order to frame him, but Vijay is too clever and had already worn gloves. One day while chasing a rabbit, Sahibaan ends up in the palace ground of Vijay & is abducted by his guards and left at the mercy of Vijay, but Sahibaan manages to escape. Vijay, however, is unable to get her out of his mind and asks Diwan Durga Singh (Bharat Kapoor) to search high and low for her. The Diwan is able to find her during a Mela and takes several men, sweetmeats, jewelry and clothing to propose to a delighted and disbelieving Balakram and his wife. The same day Gopi was planning to ask for Sahibaan's hand in marriage from her dad. Meanwhile at the Mela, Razee was also present and was attracted to Gopi. Sahibaan's parents are angered when Sahibaan refuses to marry Vijay and asks them to get her to marry Gopi. When Gopi proposes to Balakram, Gopi is humiliated, beaten and asked to leave. Diwan returns to Vijay, who decides to kill Gopi. Vijay locates Gopi, beats him, and throws him in the river. Razee finds Gopi at a riverbank, barely alive and persuades Tikka to take him home. When Sahibaan says that Vijay had attempted to molest her, Balakram refuses to permit her to marry Vijay, despite of the fact that Vijay promises to stop drinking alcohol and having his way with women. Vijay forbids Durga Singh from abducting Sahibaan again, as he truly loves her. Both Balakram and Sahibaan set out to try and locate Gopi, as Sahibaan is convinced that he is alive. They find Gopi's clothes near a funeral pyre (these clothes were discarded by Razee as they were drenched in blood) and assumes that Gopi is now dead. Meanwhile Gopi gains consciousness under Razee's care. Tikka finds that Vijay is in love with Sahibaan. Gopi overhears this and runs after Sahibaan. Razee stops him and tells him that she loves him, but Gopi has already promised himself to Sahibaan. She convinces Gopi to come back and promises to take him to Sahibaan once the rains subside. Tikka agrees to help Razee as he wants to deny Vijay at all costs. Meanwhile Sahibaan gives up and agrees to marry Vijay. Tikka confronts Vijay but is instead beaten up by Vijay. But this gives time for Gopi to reach Sahibaan. Razee helps Gopi and Sahibaan escape, but Vijay pursues them. Durga stops Gopi and Sahibaan by putting rocks in their horse carriage path. Razee dies when the carriage overturns. Durga tries to convince Sahibaan, but she jumps into the river to escape. Vijay arrives and shoots Durga. Gopi jumps after Sahibaan. Vijay jumps to save both but can only flush out their dead bodies.

On Raju's 5th birthday party, to please him, his father gets married to Laxmi (Aruna Irani), thinking that she will take care of Raju more than his real mother would. However, Lakshmi Devi turns out to be greedy, shrewd and cunning. She married Raju's father only for his vast fortune, money and property. Together with her brother Totaram (Anupam Kher) and his wife Mynavati (Bharati Achrekar), they conspire on how to transfer all property to Lakshmi Devi's name. However, Lakshmi Devi and Totaram are enraged when they find out that Prem's first wife had prepared a will before her death transferring all property to Raju, and that Prem is only a trustee to all the wealth. In the will, it has been written that Raju will have full control of his property only after marriage and unless his wife jointly consents with him, he will not be able to transfer his wealth and property to another name. Raju becomes completely devoted to his stepmother, doing whatever she wishes. He showers Lakshmi Devi with love and respect, ever-ready to obey her every word. Raju refuses education for his mother as she explains that despite education, man can only achieve a job for others, but he should work for his own self. When his father finds out that Raju stopped going to school at Lakshmi Devi's instructions, he calls out to her to question her. Lakshmi Devi and Totaram, hearing Prem, pours oil on the steps causing him to fall down the flight of stairs and hurting his head severely. Using this opportunity, they prove that Prem has become mentally unstable, and they lock him up in a corner room of the house. Raju being naive and uneducated, believes every word of his step-mother and her brother. Over the years, Lakshmi Devi increasingly isolates his aging father from the family and mainly Raju. Raju, meanwhile, meets Saraswati (Madhuri Dixit) and the two fall in love after Raju sees her being abducted, slapped and assaulted at a fair. After Raju saves her from being assaulted, the two fall in love and Raju marries Saraswati after everyone in the village believes that she is no longer chaste. In the meantime, Lakshmi Devi fixes an alliance for Raju with an equally uneducated girl from their own village, so that she too can be manipulated and can finally succeed in transferring the property in Lakshmi Devi and her son, Ramesh (Adi Irani), Raju's step brother's name. Lakshmi Devi is shocked to learn about Raju and Saraswati's marriage as Lakshmi Devi knows that Saraswati was not only educated but also a very intelligent girl. As usual, Lakshmi Devi puts on an act of a doting mother in front of Saraswati. Saraswati discovers that Laxmi's motherly love for Raju is fake and all what Laxmi is interested in, is capturing Raju's wealth. She is horrified to find Raju's father being treated as a mentally ill patient. Only after speaking to him does, she realizes that the reason for Raju's naive nature and uneducated status is because his stepmother manipulated him into being uneducated so that she can take advantage of him. Laxmi already has another son who is being educated but also seeks Raju's wealth which his mother Laxmi intends for him to inherit. And thus begins a battle within the household between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law which involves Saraswati trying to outdo Laxmi. Initially, Saraswati allows Raju's father to come out of his prison and insists that there is nothing wrong with him. She voices her concerns to Raju about his mother, resulting in Saraswati being slapped repeatedly around the courtyard of the house in front of all the family members. Saraswati is ready to leave the house at this point but wisely decides to apologize to her mother-in-law, only to take an oath to protect her husband and her house from Laxmi's immoral intentions. This humiliation does not deter Saraswati who cleverly starts exposing Laxmi's every step in a dignified manner for the sake of her husband. She publicly exposes the fact that Raju's younger step-brother has not received a degree in Medicine, rather that he has bought a fake one. In one incident, Saraswati, along with Prem and their faithful servants Pandu (Lakshmi Devikant Berde) and Champa (Priya Arun), planned for Lakshmi Devi to slip and fall, forcing her to be bedridden. Promptly, the responsibility of the entire household is handed over to Saraswati. Upon discovering that Saraswati is pregnant, Laxmi finally decides that enough is enough and tries to poison Saraswati by mixing poison with saffron which she knows that Saraswati will mix with her milk before she drinks it. Champa, who witnessed Lakshmi Devi mixing the poison, runs to Saraswati's rescue, narrating everything that happened and warns her against drinking the poisoned milk. Saraswati approaches Raju and tells him the truth once again. Raju refuses to believe Saraswati, even when she takes an oath upon her unborn child's life and decides to prove Saraswati wrong by offering to drink the poisoned milk himself. Only when Raju begins to cough up blood, does he realize that Saraswati was telling the truth after all. He confronts his mother in his usual innocent manner and asks her why she had forsaken him and tells her that had she simply asked him for his wealth, he would have happily agreed to give her all he had. He tells Laxmi that his last dying wish will be that he would request his mother to at least once with a clean her to call him 'her son', so that he may now die in peace. His words touch Laxmi deeply and she realizes the cruelty that she has shown her son who has only ever loved her. There is a brief altercation between Laxmi and her real son who still wishes to procure Raju's wealth. Raju, in his deteriorating state still manages to save his mother from his stepbrother. Raju recovers following treatment and agreeing to give up his worldly possessions to his mother and leaving home with his wife and father. However, at the last moment, Laxmi begs him not to leave, claiming to have learned the error of her ways; she tears up all the property papers and tells him that she does not want his wealth, all she wants is 'her son' and nothing more.

Radha (Pooja Bhatt) and Manohar (Vivek Mushran) love each other and want to get married, but Radha's dad (Ashok Saraf) does not approve of their marriage as Manohar comes from a poor family. Kishen is brought by Kamini and Ghendamal with lot of abuse, and intimidation, and is kept illiterate, so that he can blindly sign away whatever documents he is asked to sign. Kishen likes Radha, a servant, and is married, but the atrocities do not stop, and then Kishen runs away. Raja meets with Laxmi Rao and is attracted to her, he comes to her assistance when her dad, Mohan, passes away, by helping to cremate him; he comes to her aid again when Kallu and his goons attempt to sexually molest her; and when the municipality tear down her shanty hut, he decides to let her live with him. Due to her influence, he gives up his bad habits and decides to go straight. Things go well, so much so that both get ready to get married to each other in a simple temple ceremony organized by the community.
