Amid the widespread fear of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), best friends Stacy Hunter (Lea Thompson) and Melissa Halpern (Victoria Jackson) are nervous about being sexually active single women in 1980s Los Angeles, California. Stacy, who has always been interested in sex, lost her virginity in high school before initiating a series of passionate affairs with struggling musicians and artists, many of whom were complete strangers. Melissa, however, remained intimidated by sex until her sophomore year in college, when she persuaded her closest male friend to sleep with her. After a brief, unhappy engagement to a boorish fiance, Melissa yearns to lose her inhibitions around men. Stacy, however, regrets her past promiscuity and takes a vow of celibacy. Determined to find true romance, the women take a vacation to the Oasis health resort, where they begin a rigorous fitness regime. During an evening social gathering, all the guests are randomly partnered up on dates. Melissa is matched with Matthew (Peter Dvorsky), a handsome but serious psychologist conducting research for his next book, while Stacy ends up with Vincent "Vinny" Falcone (Andrew Dice Clay), a bawdy macho man from New Jersey. Over the next few days, a friendly nutritionist named Jamie (Jerry Levine) takes an interest in Melissa, and Stacy develops an attraction to Nick (Stephen Shellen), a physical trainer and former rock musician. During another social event, Jamie flirts with Melissa, but Matthew the psychologist pulls her away from the party to have sex. As they undress, however, Matthew realizes he is not attracted to Melissa enough to become aroused. Hurt and disappointed, Melissa returns to the party, where Nick serenades Stacy with one of his songs. He kisses her onstage, and they spend the night together. Melissa storms off and bumps into Vinny, who is drunk on the beach. After guzzling his flask of liquor, Melissa awakens the next morning with a terrible hangover. She returns to her room and overhears Stacy and Nick discussing the incredible sex they had the night before. Frustrated, Melissa checks out of the resort and hitchhikes to the nearest town, hoping to catch the next bus home. While waiting, she naps on a bench and dreams about Jamie the nutritionist, murmuring his name in her sleep. Suddenly, she stirs awake and is shocked to find him sitting at her feet. Admitting he followed her to ensure she was all right, he convinces her to return to the Oasis. Meanwhile, Stacy learns of her friend's abrupt departure and rushes to catch the afternoon bus. Nick decides to go with her, hoping to pursue his music career in Los Angeles. Realizing Melissa is not at her apartment, Stacy calls the resort. The two friends clarify the misunderstanding, but Melissa decides to stay at the Oasis. Overcoming her fear of intimacy, Melissa has sex with Jamie and experiences her first orgasm. Back in Los Angeles, Stacy realizes she and Nick are not compatible and she frantically drives back to the Oasis in a rental car. In the lobby, she bumps into Vinny, who has been taking romantic advice from a dating handbook and earnestly attempts to engage her in conversation. In her haste, Stacy rebuffs his advances and runs upstairs to find Melissa. She admits that having sex with Nick caused her to mistakenly believe she was in love with him. Melissa reminds her that Nick, a talented but dimwitted musician, is no different than the rest of Stacy's former sexual partners, and encourages her to end the relationship. Before she leaves, Stacy congratulates Melissa on her coupling with Jamie, and they hug. Crushed by repeated rejection, Vinny also decides to leave the resort and asks Stacy for a ride to the bus station. As they drive, Vinny reveals his insecurities about women, and Stacy regrets misjudging him. Back at her apartment, she breaks up with Nick and chooses to stop dating altogether. Sometime later, she receives an introspective letter from Vinny, who claims to have changed since his stay at the Oasis. After six months, Melissa and Jamie move in together, and Stacy remains single. While leaving a New Year's Eve party, Stacy runs into Vinny, now the polite and well-dressed owner of a lucrative limousine business. Although he apologizes for arriving unannounced, he confesses that he drove across the country just to see her. Charmed, Stacy invites him inside for breakfast. Six years later, Stacy and Vinny are happily married with two children. During their annual Christmas party, Stacy and Melissa look lovingly at their partners and embrace.
