Arjun Acharya travels from London to India after inheriting his family estate in Mangalpur, planning to host his sister Meera's wedding at the ancestral palace. Meera arrives with her fiancé Rahul, while their father Vasudev Acharya grows uneasy about the property and its history. On the journey, Arjun meets Priya, a writer researching sacred sites, who becomes drawn into the unfolding events. At the palace, caretaker Shantaram warns Arjun about an ancient curse tied to Vadhusur, a feared entity linked to missing brides. Arjun dismisses the warnings and begins renovations with wedding planner Jagdish Kewalramani and electrician Sunder Bajwa. As preparations continue, unsettling disturbances begin affecting the estate and nearby forest, pulling Arjun and Priya deeper into local legends. In the town of Mangalpur, a group of wedding guests is stranded on a deserted railway platform during a torrential downpour, waiting for a delayed train. They gather around a bonfire lit by an elderly mystic known to them only as Baba Ji and ask him why no marriages have taken place in the town for years. Baba Ji begins recounting the legend that once cursed the region, the tale of Vadhusur, a demonic immortal who abducts and kills newlywed brides on their wedding night. Years earlier, a wedding party traveling to catch a flight home from Lucknow is forced to reroute through Mangalpur because of severe flooding. Their bus driver, a local man, warns them never to bring newlyweds through the forbidden village, recounting the belief that a Rakshas kidnaps newly wed brides there. The group ignores him, and their bus suffers a puncture deep inside the forest. That night, their camp is violently attacked by an unseen creature that kidnaps the bride and leaves several others critically injured, with no memory of what happened. Sometime afterward, the respected local Dushyant Acharya dies under mysterious circumstances following forty days of self-imposed isolation, attributed to a supposed contagious illness. His aide, Kali, and the caretaker of his palace, Shantaram, discuss his final days and express unease about who will inherit the Acharya Palace, a vast, abandoned mansion long feared by the villagers. In London, Dushyant's grandchildren, Arjun Acharya (Akshay Kumar) and Meera (Mithila Palkar), live with their father, Vasudev Acharya (Jisshu Sengupta), a respected theologian. Preparations are underway for Meera's wedding to her fiance, Rahul, and because Meera's birth chart carries a manglik dosh, Arjun performs a Kadali Vivah ritual on her behalf, a symbolic marriage conducted over video call with a priest, before the real ceremony can proceed. Vasudev soon leaves for a work trip to Sydney, and a British lawyer, Richard Gardener, informs Arjun and Meera that Dushyant has left them the ancestral Acharya Palace in Mangalpur. Excited by the unexpected inheritance, and with their original wedding venue in Udaipur having fallen through, Arjun sees an opportunity to host Meera's destination wedding there and travels to India to inspect the estate. On the train journey, Arjun meets Priya (Wamiqa Gabbi), a writer researching ancient Indian temples, and saves her during an accident. Upon reaching Mangalpur, the caretaker Shantaram warns Arjun that the palace is cursed, that spirits roam its grounds at night, and that Dushyant himself never once stayed there after dark. Shantaram adds that three guards who previously attempted to stay overnight either lost their minds or took their own lives. Arjun dismisses the warning, spends the night inside unharmed, and concludes the stories are nothing more than superstition. While exploring, he discovers a sealed prayer room whose key has gone missing. Arjun hires laborers and brings in wedding planner Jagdish Kewalramani (Paresh Rawal), along with Jagdish's nephew, the electrician Sunder "Balli" Bajwa (Rajpal Yadav), to begin renovating the palace for the ceremony. Increasingly strange incidents begin occurring around the property. When Sunder mishandles a live wire, Arjun is electrocuted and briefly dies before Priya revives him with CPR. Sunder then becomes possessed and leads Arjun and Jagdish toward Vadhusur's temple, and Priya, driven by her own research into the site, convinces Arjun to bring her along as well. At the temple, the group witnesses a massive swarm of bats even in broad daylight and is forced to hide in the light as a figure resembling Vadhusur briefly emerges from the darkness. The family's spiritual advisor, Vashisht Guruji (Zakir Hussain), confirms to Arjun that the curse is real, though Arjun continues to resist the idea. Meera arrives with her in-laws for the wedding, and Vasudev, now back from his trip, urges Arjun to abandon the palace as a venue because of the curse. Together, Vasudev and Arjun search for the missing prayer-room key and uncover the family's buried history. Vasudev reveals that Dushyant had once served as the priest who kept Vadhusur dormant through nightly mantras, and that his son, Madhav, and his disciple, Vasudev himself, were both raised under Dushyant's guidance in Mangalpur, where Vasudev and a young woman named Yashodha (Tabu) fell in love. Madhav desired Yashodha as well. Dushyant had built a device that automatically played the sacred chants from sunset to sunrise to keep the demon asleep, believing that if Vadhusur failed to revive for thirty six thousand moons, he would perish forever. When Vasudev and Yashodha's marriage was arranged, Madhav sabotaged the device so that the mantras played in reverse, partially summoning Vadhusur in exchange for Yashodha's hand. Dushyant caught his son in the act and stopped him, but feared Madhav had not been freed from the demon's influence. Forced to obey his guru, Vasudev cruelly rejected Yashodha, leading her to believe he had never loved her at all. With her own family arriving and her father eager to see her married, Dushyant arranged her marriage to Madhav instead. Afterward, Dushyant abandoned the temple, fearing his son remained corrupted. Yashodha later discovered that Madhav was still partially possessed and fled to Vasudev, who rescued her, and the two left Mangalpur forever. Arjun then learns the final truth: Vasudev is not his biological father, and Arjun is in fact Madhav's son. Dushyant, it is revealed, had orchestrated the inheritance before his death in the hope that a final wedding at the palace would fully resurrect Vadhusur and, in doing so, free Madhav from serving as the demon's living vessel. It becomes clear that the hauntings, and the figure resembling Vadhusur, have all along been the work of the still partially possessed Madhav. Despite uncovering this truth, Arjun does not call off Meera's wedding. Instead, the family resolves to use the ceremony itself to end Vadhusur permanently, reasoning that if the marriage is completed before sunset and the couple crosses the Ganga at that same moment, the demon will be unable to reach the bride. When Rahul's father insists, on astrological grounds, that the ceremony must instead take place at night, Arjun angrily confronts him for nearly getting everyone killed, declaring that birth charts are written by men, not by gods, and the daytime muhurat is fixed. Around this time, Priya admits to Arjun that she has feelings for him but cannot accept them, revealing that she is already married, before quietly leaving him. Confused, Arjun reviews footage from their earlier visit to Vadhusur's temple and discovers that every photograph and video from that day shows him standing alone, with no trace of Priya at all, revealing that she was a spirit the entire time and very possibly one of the missing brides herself. On the day of the ceremony, every precaution is taken: the wedding is timed to finish before sunset, and the couple crosses the Ganga as planned. Even so, Vadhusur manages to abduct Meera in the final moments. After a series of failed attempts to reach her, Arjun ultimately succeeds in rescuing his sister before she can be killed, bringing Vadhusur's reign of terror to an end. The story returns to the railway platform, where the stranded travelers ask Baba Ji how Arjun was able to perceive the spirits haunting Mangalpur throughout the ordeal. The old mystic explains that when Arjun briefly died during the earlier electrocution, he gained the ability to see the dead, since only the dead can see the dead. He then reveals that he himself is Arjun, who remained in Mangalpur in the years that followed and has spent the past twenty four years performing rituals for the peace of his father Madhav's soul.

Ajay thinks that his father's ideal & sacrifices have given him nothing. He has no respect for his father's ideals, which his father still sticks to. Ajay believes that there is an "Indian" way of doing things, which is slow, inefficient, involves bribery and corruption, but eventually gets the work done. Ajay is the star reporter for his channel and has the knack of reaching locations that no other reporter is able to access. Once he covers a bomb defusing operation live on TV. The disposal expert (Sanjay Mishra) cuts the wrong wire and Ajay has to jump 20 floors to a inflated mattress on the ground to escape. Shahid (Atul Parchure) is Ajay's assistant. The rival news channel Galaxy TV ropes in Ria Banerjee (Juhi Chawla) to bring him down and garner the highest ratings. Ria is antithesis of Ajay & uses her charm to get her work done. The Chief Minister Mushran also uses Ajay to conduct scripted interviews for his party leaders like MK Sharma to improve their public image and divert public attention from the criminal cases pending against them. Ajay is attracted to Ria and tries to seduce her. But Ria is approached one of Ajay's ex-girlfriends Shalini who reveals that Ajay is a flirt and a cheat and changes girlfriends frequently. She tells Ria about Ajay's diary which has a list of all the girl's phone numbers and his schedule of meeting them. The next time Ajay meets her, Ria records the contents of his diary with a camera hidden inside her purse. Ria contacts all the women to confront Ajay at the same time, and the takes Ajay's slot to interview MK Sharma. Ria finds that MK Sharma lives a life of opulence inside the prison. This expose explodes on the news channel and takes Ria's channel to the top of the ratings. Now, Ajay is under pressure to being his channel back to the top. Pappu Junior/Choti (Johnny Lever) is a don who is soon to be ousted from his own gang, owing to his inability to make it big in the crime world. Ajay approaches Choti with an offer: arrange a fake attack on opposition leader Ramakant Dua's (Shakti Kapoor) brother-in-law Madanlal Gupta on national TV. Choti will earn respect & Ajay's channel will gain TRP. Little does Ajay know that the plan is going to turn too real. Madanlal Gupta is gunned down by an assailant named Mohan Joshi (Paresh Rawal). When Ajay learns that he was not Choti's man, he panics. Ria learns about Ajay & Choti's deal, but they decide to help each other nevertheless. Mohan is arrested but does not open his mouth even once during police torture. To avoid any public unrest, the Police Commissioner (Anjan Srivastav) declares that Mohan is a terrorist working for unknown terror organizations. Minister Ramakant takes advantage of his brother-in-law's death to gain votes and sympathy; he also instigates a pogrom to ensure his position in the government. Meanwhile, Mohan somehow escapes out of jail. As the news of the incident begins circulating around India, violent protests begin. Ajay and Ria both start covering the city's riots and start to get along with one another; Ajay's womanizing nature had previously turned off Ria and caused friction between them. Ajay & Ria are fighting over the matter in their car, unaware that Mohan is hiding in the same car. Mohan accosts them, where Ajay accuses him of being a terrorist. Mohan has an angry outburst & tells him that he is not a terrorist. Mohan goes on to narrate his story. Mohan has an ailing wife Laxmi Joshi (Neena Kulkarni) & a now-dead daughter Kavita. Mohan says that his daughter went to an interview for a secretarial job at Madanlal Gupta's office, where the latter sexually assaulted her. She died from the trauma and as no lawyer was willing to fight the case due to the perpetrator's political power, Mohan was left helpless, running from door to door for justice. Hopeless and distraught, he took the law into his own hands and killed Madanlal. Ajay & Ria are shaken by his confession & decide to help Mohan. Throughout their journey together, Mohan sees Ajay and Ria as his own children and feels genuine gratefulness towards them, returning the favor by helping them realize their love for each other. Eventually, Ajay and Ria reunite Mohan with his wife, who is extremely happy to see him. Ajay hands over the video tape of this confession to his boss Kaka (Satish Shah). Unfortunately, Ramakant Dua has joined hands with his rival Chief Minister Mushran (Govind Namdeo) as he fears that their secrets might come out if Mohan surrenders. Similarly, Ajay's boss forms an alliance with Ria's boss Shenoy (Dalip Tahil) after knowing about the tape. The ministers & channel heads come together and trick Ajay & Ria into giving the tape to them with no intention of giving it back, for their own selfish reasons. Mohan gets found, and after being arrested, is sentenced to be publicly hung; Ajay and Ria suddenly realized they were tricked and conned by their bosses. Together with Choti, they work to get the tape back from the clutches of the minister. They successfully receive the tape, and Ajay succeeds in broadcasting the confession and story from Mohan just one hour before his execution. Ajay and Ria tearfully plead with the nation to stop this injustice and call on all Indians to rescue Mohan. They succeed, and the entire city, including Ajay's family, gathers to save Ajay from being tortured by the police and save Mohan. Although the ministers and policemen are desperate to stop the protesters from entering prison grounds, the ACP's force is unable to shoot at the crowd due to them wielding India's flag; they are unable to stop the city from breaching the police barricades. In a blatant mockery and critique of the media's selfish obsession with ratings and views, Mohan is made to wear a shirt sporting the logos of sponsors and companies. Seconds before the execution, Ajay having stormed into the prison ground with Ria and the others, saves Mohan and the protesters beat up the politicians and chase them out, ensuring their careers are over. Mohan thanks everyone and Ria proposes to Ajay, who accepts.

The gangs of the city are run by Shiv Saran (Gulshan Grover), Bosco, Girja Shankar (Paresh Rawal), Raghunandan (Roopesh Kumar), Bansidhar (Sharat Saxena) and Girdhar (Mahavir Shah). The heads are worried that somebody is picking off their gang members one by one. Police Inspector Amar (Vinod Khanna) goes on a daring drug bust, ending in the arrest of notorious underworld criminals Bansi and Girdhar. Amar's work goes down the drain as the criminals dodge the law and are set free. The lawyer is able to argue that when Amar apprehended the 2 men, he was not in his police uniform, and he did not declare that he is a police officer before arresting them. The lawyer claims that Bansi and Girdhar had withdrawn cash from the bank earlier that day for payroll and got scared when they saw a plain clothes person chasing them. Barrister Shrikant Sharma (Vinod Mehra) is Amar's well-wisher and advises him to remain calm. Amar says that when the law fails, ordinary citizens are forced to take the law in their own hands. Amar says that one day, one crazy person will kill these criminals who are not punished by the law. On cue, a mysterious vigilante shoots Bansi and Girdhar dead. Amar's senior DSP (Shafi Inamdar) assigns him a desk job and appoints Sub-Inspector Reema Kapoor (Dimple Kapadia) as Amar's assistant. Havaldar (Johnny Lever) also works with Amar at the police station. Reema is a very clumsy person and causes chaos wherever she goes. Amar and Reema fall in love with each other and Amar introduces her to his mother (Sushma Seth) and friend, Nitin (Jackie Shroff). Nitin is a journalist and publishes articles against crime and criminals in the city. Nitin lives with his mother (Seema Deo). Nisha (Sonam) is in love with Nitin. Nisha is the daughter of Shrikant. Shrikant wants Nisha to be an independent woman and does not want her to marry Nitin. He makes Nisha realize that Nitin is not in love with her. Meanwhile, a vigilante wreaks havoc in the city, killing the members of the underworld. When Raghunandan is murdered by the vigilante, Reema is in the building, and she gives chase to the vigilante. The vigilante manages to get away and Reema is met by Amar who happened to be in the neighborhood. Next, the vigilante goes after Bosco and once again manages to escape Reema who had guessed correctly that the vigilante would pursue Bosco. After the vigilante escaped, Reema is met by Amar, who saves her from drowning in the swimming pool. Rita (Huma Khan) was with both Bosco and Raghunandan when they were killed by the vigilante. This leads Shiv Saran to believe that she knew the vigilante and he kills her and throws her body into the ocean. The body is discovered by the police and Amar finds Shiv Saran's neck chain in Rita's hands. Amar arrests Shiv Saran from his casino. Once again, the lawyer argues that the locket could have belonged to anyone, and the confession by Shiv Saran was coerced in custody. Shiv Saran is released from custody. Reema stumbles upon Amar's closet, where she finds a helmet and a jacket worn by the vigilante. She brings the matter to the notice of Amar's superiors. Amar is suspended and charged with multiple homicides. Amar's mother also throws him out of the house. Turns out the DSP was in cahoots with Shiv Saran and Girja Shankar. Nitin comes to console Amar, but both are attacked by Shiv Saran. In the attack, Nitin is seriously injured, and Amar pursues Shiv Saran and corners him at gun point. Reema arrives and stops Amar from shooting Shiv Saran. As they argue, the vigilante arrives and shoots Shiv Saran dead. Before Reema can respond, Amar takes a shot at the vigilante and injures him, but the vigilante manages to get away. The vigilante falls from his bike after a distance, and it is revealed to be Nitin. A van comes with a doctor Abdul Rehman (Anjan Srivastav), picks Nitin and leaves. Girja and DSP discuss how to find the vigilante and decide to orchestrate things in such a way that Amar starts hating the vigilante and that way Amar would be the one hunting the vigilante on their behalf. Reema and Amar get engaged and their engagement is attended by Reema's uncle Judge Kapoor (A. K. Hangal). Kapoor sees Nitin and remembers him as a murderer named Jai Kishan from an earlier case in his career. Kapoor narrates the incident to Amar and Shrikant. Kapoor says that Jai Kishan was on trial for the murder of 5 innocents. Jai Kishan was sentenced to death, but the van carrying him to jail had an accident and he died. That is when a person wearing the same clothes as a vigilante attacks the engagement party. In the attack Amar's mother and Reema's uncle Judge Kapoor are both killed. When the attack took place, Nitin was out of the party venue to run an errand. The man pretending to be the vigilante is Girja himself. Girja attacks many other innocent people and in one instance Reema sees the mark on his hand. Amar now starts to doubt Nitin and confronts him at his home. Nitin accepts that he has killed 11 such people who were not punished by law but says that he did not kill Amar's mother or Reema's uncle as they were killed by the person who wanted to defame the vigilante. Nitin claims that he is not alone, and many people like him have played the role as well. Nitin takes Amar to an underground society which is headed by Shrikant. Before Amar could arrest them, DSP arrives at the location and arrests Amar along with the other terrorists, including Nitin. The matter goes to court where Shrikant argues that killing people who were already murderers and criminals is not against the law. These were people who had escaped punishment due to the loopholes in law and all they did was to provide justice to their victims. Jai Kishan says that he was friends with Nitin, who had died due to a drugs overdose. The drugs business in the city was run by Bosco and his associates. At court, Reema sees the mark on Girja's hand and identifies him as the person who killed the innocent people, pretending to be the vigilante. The DSP abducts Reema but is seen by Nisha. Nisha informs Shrikant, Jai Kishan and Amar about how Girja is the real killer and how DSP abducted Reema. Amar and Jai Kishan escaped police custody at the court and went after Girja and DSP. In the fight, Girja turns on the DSP and shoots him. The DSP has a change of heart and asks Amar to take him to court, where he gives testimony against Girja. Girja apprehends Amar and Jai Kishan and takes them to court as escaped convicts. But Amar had anticipated this and hidden Reema and the DSP. Reema brings DSP to court, who identifies Girja as the real killer. Girja tries to escape, but is killed by Amar and Jai Kishan.
