Based on the Hindu epic Ramayana's last chapter Uttar Kand. After defeating Ravanji, Bhagwan Shri Ram returns to Ayodhya, is crowned the emperor and settles down to a harmonious lifestyle along with his biological and fosters mothers, three brothers (Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan), their respective wives, and his very own wife, Devi Maa Sitaji, who is expecting soon. When his spies inform him that his reputation may be at stake as Sitaji had spent over a year in Ravanji's Lanka, he asks a reluctant Lakshman, to ensure that Sitaji is sent to exile. A devastated, pregnant, and distraught Sitaji is rescued by Maharishi Valmiki, who takes her to his Ashram, renames her Lokpavni, where she subsequently gives birth to two sons, Kush and Lav. Valmikiji trains them in every possible way, including knowledge, warfare, and religion. Ten years later, the twins decide to visit a drought and famine-ravaged Ayodhya to get the blessings of Ramji and Sitaji as well recite the Ramayan - and this is where they will find out that Ramji has exiled Sitaji, and they return home disappointed and refuse to recite the Ramayan anymore. A destitute family is saved by street urchin Amar's lottery winnings and adopt the boy. But the happy household is divided when the grown-up children turn on each other. A poor mill worker, Dhanraj, finds out that his sister, Pushpa, is pregnant, and that the man responsible for this is his boss, Hira. He goes there to get him to marry her, only to be told to get his sister an abortion. Unable to bear this shame, she kills herself, and Dhanraj swears to avenge her death. Hira fires Dhanraj, leaving him, his wife, two sons and a daughter destitute and on the verge of starvation. Deciding to kill himself and his family, he takes them on an outing at Chowpatty, and there he mixes poison in some snacks and takes them to his family. On the way, a small boy steals the food. Dhanraj catches up to this boy, and takes the food away from him, and disposes it off. He finds that this small boy has a winning lottery ticket. He rejoices, tells this good news to his family, and adopts the boy, who is now his goodluck charm. Thereafter they live a very comfortable life. Years later, all of Dhanraj's children, Renu, Vishwas, and Kishan have grown up alongwith the boy, Amar, who is now a police inspector. Renu and Vishwas are married, and Amar and Kishan will soon be married too. Kishan gets married to Hira's daughter, and Amar marries a petty thief, Geeta. Things don't go quite well in this household, as money is being embezzled; and then Vishwas' wife blames Amar of sexually molesting her, forcing Amar and Geeta to leave the house. Dhanraj has always considered Amar a goodluck charm for this house, feels vulnerable and open to attacks. And his perceptiveness gives fruit when Vishwas and his wife decide to leave this house and live separately, and it is on the very same day that Dhanraj is arrested for marketing suprious drugs, and the arresting officer is none other than Inspector Amar.

Ramu overcomes Pitamber and is felicitated by Indumati. Ramu falls head over heels in love with Indumati, and even saves her life when she is bitten by a snake. But the Raja does not approve of this match as he would like Indumati to marry a wealthy man, he accordingly instructs Ramu to get rich first before he can even consider marrying Indumati. It is then a magician named Mantrik comes to Ramu's aid, and shows him how to attain wealth. Ramu has to travel many miles, go underground into a deep dark cave, & free a Goddess from a curse of living eternally as a crocodile. It is here that Ramu learns that Mantrik has an ulterior motive in assisting him, so he beheads him, gets a lot of precious stones, jewelery, etc. and heads over to Ujjain to get the Raja to get him married to Indumati. The Raja readily agrees and a wedding is arranged with great pomp, ceremony, and festivities. But Ramu is in for a shock when Indumati disappears during the wedding ceremony, and Ramu undertakes to go and look for her. Mohan Kumar (Dilip Kumar) is a honest and conscientious man working as the General Manager of a shipping company owned by his friend, Dinesh (Pradeep Kumar). When Mohan Kumar comes to know of their activities, the three men murder Dinesh and deviously frame Mohan Kumar for it. Mohan Kumar is helpless. Unable to prove his innocence in court (he was holding the gun when the police arrived at Dinesh's house.), he is sentenced to a 14-year jail term. After that Sumitra tries to attack the trio in the street but is thrown off by then and come under a commercial vehicle and dies. Mohan vows revenge against the trio after he returns from jail. After serving the jail term Mohan Kumar takes help from Puri (Ashok Kumar) whose life he had saved in prison, to take revenge on the three villains. Mohan searches for his son Ravi in orphanages and finds that he ran away several yrs ago. Puri has connections with the under-world. While Mohan Kumar is also unable to trace his son Ravi. Roma lives with her wayward uncle Jagdish (Satyen Kappu), a mean alcoholic. Unknown to Mohan Kumar, his lost son Ravi (Rishi Kapoor) is a sophisticated conman and steals money by betraying people's trust. Jugal, Bhandari and Balwant still run the smuggling business. Ravi is asked to deliver a few liquor bottles to a party at Bhandari's house. Bhandari is taking a bath, so the servant thinks Ravi is a guest and invites him in. Ravi sits at the table and plays cards, which JK sees and is impressed with his tricks. JK employs Ravi for Rs 10000 per night. Puri helps Mohan to track down JK as well as Roma. Mohan rescues Roma from Jagdish. Mohan starts by figuring out the Modus Operandi of JK's smuggling operations. He finds out the location where JK's smuggled gold is being offloaded in Bombay, by kidnapping JK's agent Teja (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Mohan then confronts the trio and tells them that is going after their lives. JK asks Balwant to kill Mohan at the earliest. Balwant finds that Mohan is taking Roma out for dinner on her birthday. As luck would have it, Ravi was scouting the same hotel and sees Roma alone with a purse full of money. Mohan is running late and Ravi strikes a conversation with Roma. Mohan meets Ravi when he arrives & feels an unexplained affection for Ravi. when Balwant shoots at Mohan, Ravi sees it in time and pushes him away, thus saving Mohan's life. Balwant sees Ravi and reports the matter to JK. JK believes Ravi when he says that he doesn't know Mohan and agrees to be JK's spy in Mohan's house. Ravi pretends to be in love with Roma in order to get close to Mohan. Roma loves Ravi and recommends him to Mohan for a job in Mohan's office. Ravi figures out that Mohan knows the location of JK's warehouses and intends to attack. Ravi tries to warn JK but gets delayed in traffic and then his lift gets stuck. Mohan sets the warehouses on fire. Bhandari had moved all of his life's savings into those warehouses, based on threat from Mohan, that he would target his wealth. Bhandari is penniless now. Bhandari is distraught and jumps into the blazing fire to save his money and dies. Unknown to anyone, Mohan had already removed Bhandari's money bags from the warehouse and delivered them to Puri. Jugal Kishore and Balwant assign Ravi to kill Mohan Kumar For Rs 10 Lakhs. Ravi decides to kill Mohan at Puri's party that very night. Unable to do so (he hesitates while taking the shot), Ravi falls off the roof, and is ironically saved by Mohan Kumar. Kabir (Mac Mohan), one of Puri's henchmen, finds Ravi's gun. Suspicious, he spies on Ravi and finds out his connection to JK and Balwant. Mohan Kumar is enraged and throws Ravi out even though he begs that he loves Roma and respects Mohan. Balwant tries to kill Mohan Kumar but fails. Mohan Kumar chases him and hit by a truck, Balwant dies. Ravi runs into Jagdish, who tells Ravi how Mohan was convicted for Dinesh's murder. Ravi confronts Mohan in front of Roma, and Roma is devastated to know that Mohan hid this fact from her. She decides to leave with Ravi. Meanwhile JK's goon reaches Ravi's house, and they find that Ravi is in fact Mohan's son. JK decides to abduct Ravi. While abducting Ravi, JK finds that Roma is Dinesh's daughter and abducts her too. Now JK informs Mohan that his son and Roma are in his custody and demands Rs 50 Lakhs as ransom. When Mohan reaches the designated location, Ravi realizes that Mohan is his father (JK reveals the same). Ravi and Mohan team up to get the upper hand on JK, but Teja arrives to swing the equation again in JK's favor. At the end Puri arrives to disarm JK and Teja. After a huge fight, Mohan ends up shooting JK.

One day he comes across another young man, Vijay Singh, and finds out that he is struggling with taking vengeance against two men who had traumatized and killed some of his family members, and decides to help him. It is then Khan finds out that Gupta is still alive and decides to kill him, quite dramatically in the same courtroom where he was convicted for his murder. Years later Neera comes to visit her in-laws in a small town, and is introduced to a kind and saintly person with special powers for healing named Shradhanand. She is shocked to find that Shradhanand is none other than Vicky. Rai Sahab (Pran) is a retired colonel who lives in his family mansion with his five grandchildren (Rama, Ajay, Vijay, Neeta and Sanju). All five children are estranged from him as they believe he is responsible for their father Nilesh Rai's (Sanjeev Kumar) death. Rai Sahab is a strict disciplinarian who has become cold and miserable after Nilesh stubbornly leaves him to pursue music professionally against his wishes. After his son's death, he brings the children to live with him. Music was something Rai Saheb believes beneath their stature. This creates a rift between them, and Nilesh leaves to pursue his dream. He returns a few years later, now married to his music teacher's daughter Suajat. Rai Sahab welcomes them, but tells Nilesh that in order to live a life on his own terms he must make his own house. He never hears from his son for the next 17 years (since he didn't know where Nilesh had gone), although he waits desperately. When he finally learns his son is dead, he rushes and brings back his grandchildren to live with him, but despite his best efforts at providing them with all material comforts and facilities, they do not get along. However the children refuse to obey him and constantly flout his rules. Rai Sahab is desperately seeking a tutor for them, but no teacher lasts for more than a few weeks (the children play pranks on them and scare them away), as none of teachers can turn his 'savage' grandchildren into well-behaved people. Ravi (Jeetendra) is looking for a job in the city. He is a nice guy and gives up opportunities when he finds that he is replacing an old, loyal employee of a firm. Ravi gets a letter from his uncle, informing him of a job opening for a tutor at Rai Sahab's house in his village. Ravi has no parents but is close to his aunt (Leela Mishra) and uncle (A. K. Hangal), who live in the village. While he does not take to Rai Sahab's cold demeanor in their first meeting, he initially takes the job out of need (since the next opportunity is a few months away & he has no money to even buy proper shoes). Later Rai Sahab tells him he believes Ravi can set his grandchildren straight and implores him to do so. Ravi promises to try. Rai Saheb offers him a place to stay in his Haveli The children try their best to scare Ravi away, like they have with previous teachers, however instead of complaining about them Ravi laughs at their pranks and tries to befriend them. He realizes that Rai Sahab has strict rules against singing and laughing in the house, and that the children are not even allowed to play outside as they had once tried to run away. Unlike other teachers, Ravi does not believe in punishments or scoldings and instead tries to teach with humor, stories, music and play. He has a strict rule about not hitting kids with a cane and ignores their misdemeanors as pranks. He realizes quickly that the children do not need a teacher, but are starved of affection and stubborn like their grandfather, which is causing them to misbehave. Ravi also counsels Rama to not take offense at every little thing with Rai Saheb, as her behavior is reflected directly in the actions of the siblings, who go on strike with her and in the process hurt their own studies and future. When Rai Sahab leaves homes for a few weeks for work, Ravi opens up Nilesh's old room and starts playing his sitar. The children open up to him after this. He regularly takes them out on picnics, plays with them and tells them stories. All the children start studying with Ravi and their behavior changes, becoming more receptive and respectful of elders. Ravi and Rama (Jaya Bhaduri) the oldest of the siblings slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. Rama is eighteen and the daughter of Nilesh and Sujata (Geeta Siddharth). Rama's mother passed away when she was a little girl. She learned music from her father and is close and protective of her younger siblings. Though she initially leads siblings in all their mischief, she quickly warms up to Ravi's unique approach and eventually becomes an ideal granddaughter. Rama begrudges Rai Sahab as she believes he never reached out to her father or them when they were destitute and arrived many days after he father's death, despite her father having written to him earlier. However, she finds out from Ravi that Rai Sahab received the letter very late, as he was away on business, and left as soon as he read it, without bothering to even carry anything with him. He reminds her how Rai Sahab lived with them for two days wearing the same clothes he came in, pleading with them to come and live with him. Rama realizes that she has misjudged her grandfather. A few days later, Rai Sahab returns to find the children studying with Rama and his son's framed photo hanging in their foyer. At first he is upset, but equally surprised to see his grandchildren studying quietly and greeting him respectfully, something that has not happened before. He finds out that Ravi has had to leave in his absence as he was offered a job in the city. However he is extremely happy at the children's changed behavior and begins playing and laughing with them, thankful to Ravi for having 'introduced' him to his grandchildren. In the city Ravi misses Rama. He received a letter from her and wonders if he should go back and ask Rai Sahab for her hand in marriage. His friend Amit (Vinod Khanna in a cameo) encourages him, and he leaves to meet Rai Sahab. Upon meeting him, he learns that Rai Sahab intends to marry Rama to a family friend's grandson - a wish he could not fulfill with his own son. Dejected, Ravi leaves without meeting the kids and Rama. As he packs and leaves for the railway station, Rai Sahab asks Rama if she met Ravi. Rama is surprised. In a poignant moment, Rai Sahab looks at Rama's face and realizes the truth. He brings her to the station just as the train pulls out with Ravi standing in the doorway. Seeing Rama and Rai Sahab, Ravi jumps out of the moving train and both unite. An ending scene invites audiences to their wedding on Monday 9 April.

Years pass and Vijay (Dharmendra) grows up into a fine young man. He decides to find employment as a police constable much to Kailashnath's displeasure. He gets Rs 300 per month as salary, which embarrasses Kailashnath. Gogo 'RamMilan' (Mehmood) is Kailashnath's driver. Gogo loves Chham Chham (Helen), who is a rich socialite. To impress her, Gogo acts like a rich businessman and Vijay helps him by posing as a driver. Chham Chaam is the daughter of trader Jatadhari (Dhumal). Dindayal (Madan Puri) also has his eyes on Chham Chham. When she brings Gogo home, Dindayal tries to convince Jatadhari that he looks like Kailashnath's driver and not his son. So Jatadhari insists that Gogo invite them to his house and introduce to his father. Gogo blackmails all the house servants (who have misdeeds of their own) to serve him as Kailashnath's son for the time Jata and his daughter are at the house. Vijay's boss is Kewal Mehra (Krishan Dhawan). Kavita finds out that her uncle Diwaan Saab (D.K. Sapru) had received a phone call a few days after her father's disappearance. A man named Ashok (Pran) threatened Diwan that Shyam Kumar (Manmohan) has the knowledge of what happened to Diwan's business partner and Step brother. Diwan promised to meet Ashok in Bombay. She feels that Diwan & Ashok conspired together to betray her father, and Shyam Kumar knows where her father is. Kavita travels to Bombay and meets Diwan Saab, where Shyam Kumar is a regular visitor. When Vijay announces himself as the CID officer to Diwan, Diwan meets Ashok. Ashok says he only fears Shyam as he saw many things. Shyam is blackmailing Diwan and needs Rs 5000 to keep his mouth shut. It is revealed that Diwan and Ashok buried Kavita's father in the jungle, where Shyam took a photo of their dastardly act. Meanwhile Shyam also lusts after Kavita. Vijay and Kavita start off on the wrong foot, when Kavita mistakes Vijay for Shyam and spends an entire day in picnic with him. Later, Vijay attends Kavita's birthday party and Kavita asks Shyam to teach Vijay a lesson, but Vijay easily defeats Shyam and makes a joke out of him. Kavita is mad with jealousy. She writes a love letter to Vijay inviting him to a lake, while planning with the boatman to drop Vijay in the middle of the lake, since she knows that Vijay doesn't know how to swim. The boatman is good friends with Gogo and reveals Kavita's plan to him and the news reaches Vijay. Vijay sends the letter to Shyam Kumar and thus Kavita's joke is played out on Shyam. Shyam ends up in the water and this further infuriates Kavita. Eventually Kavita falls for Vijay's charms and the 2 fall in love. Kavita tells Vijay how her father disappeared 2 yrs ago and only Shyam knows where he is. Kavita finds Vijay is a CID officer assigned to her father's case. Vijay asks Kavita to write a love letter to Shyam. Shyam agrees to divulge everything to Kavita and calls her for a meeting, alone. Ashok overhears this and decides to kill Shyam. He calls Diwan, but the call is received by Kavita. When Kavita goes to meet Shyam, she finds him dead. Meanwhile Savirti runs into Kailashnath, but doesn't reveal the switch that happened several yrs ago. Kailashnath meets Kavita and wants to meet her parents for her wedding. Kavita says she only has an aunt, and her name is Yashoda. Even her husband left her and since then she stays with them. Kailashnath meets the aunt and figures out that it is his wife. Kailashnath begs her to come home to meet Vijay. Now Ashok starts calling Kailashnath, saying that his name is Satish Raj. Satish claims to be Kailashnath's son and says when Kailash came to the orphanage to pick his son, he was handed another kid by mistake. Kailash decides to confirm the truth with Savitri. Savitri admits her mistake. Kailash goes home and tells the whole story to Yashoda. Kailash takes Yashoda to meet Satish Raj, their son. Kailash wants to stay together with Vijay, but this is not acceptable to Satish. When Vijay finds out, he reaches out to Satish. He brings Satish home and decides to leave himself. It is revealed that Satish is not Kailashnath's son, but the real son of Savitri, who decided to insert Satish as Kailash's son to lay a claim to his wealth. Meanwhile, on the streets, Vijay runs into his real mother Laxmi, while saving her from a bunch of goons. Laxmi lives her son, Gogo. Gogo has a friend named Mehmood Ali (Mehmood Jr.). Yashoda introduces Kavita to her son Satish. But Kavita recognizes his voice as Ashok, the man she heard speaking on the phone with her uncle. The news reaches Vijay who is convinced that Satish and Ashok are the same guy. Vijay goes to meet Savitri, whose testimony was crucial to the whole issue. Savitri gets scared and calls Ashok to meet her, without knowing that Vijay was keeping an eye on her. Now it is confirmed that Savitri and Ashok know each other and are conspiring. One day, Savitri runs into Yashoda at a doctor's clinic and follows her home. Meanwhile a blackmailer (Shatrughan Sinha) calls Satish and says that Shyam had left evidence with him with instructions to go to the police if he died. the Blackmailer wants a deal of Rs 1 Lakhs with Satish, in exchange for the evidence. Vijay was tapping Satish's phone and heard the entire conversation. Satish calls Diwan and asks him to go for the money delivery, since Vijay has his eyes on Satish. Vijay hears this also Now, Vijay and Kewal have captured the blackmailer and Kewal poses as the blackmailer in front of Diwan, when he comes for the drop. Diwan admits to killing Kavita's father and is arrested by Kewal's forces. Meanwhile Gogo is talking to Yashoda and mentions how Satish came into the Kailashnath household, and became his son, displacing Vijay. and the whole thing was due to Savitri's mistake. Yashoda says that Vijay is her son, whom Kailashnath brought from the Orphanage and in reality Gogo is Kailashnath's real son. Satish and Savitri overhear the whole conversation and kidnap Yashoda. Gogo had gone to fetch Vijay. Muhammad Ali sees the kidnapping and alerts Gogo and Vijay. Vijay attacks with Gogo, but Satish manages to overpower him. Satish starts a fire to kill everyone, but Vijay fights back and saves Yashoda and Gogo. The police arrives and arrests Satish Kailashnath accepts both Vijay and Gogo as his sons.

As the family is not very rich, Raj decides to move from the hostel to the residence of a family. He finds one such family in Gandhinagar, which consists of Choudhury Hukumat Rai (Ashok Kumar), a lawyer by profession, his wife (Nimmi), and only daughter Shanti (Mala Sinha). Hukumat takes an instant liking to Raj, and tells him that his wife will only allow him to take up residence if he tells her that he is already married. Raj reluctantly does so, and thus acquires residence with the Rai family. Eventually Mrs. Rai takes a liking to Raj, so does Shanti. Shanti finds out Raj and her dad had lied to the family about Raj's marital status, she confronts Raj, and he readily admits that he lied. Both fall in love. Mr. and Mrs. Rai are thrilled, when they come to know that Raj and Shanti are in love, and excitedly plan their marriage. As Raj's brother is critically ill, Raj has to return to his village. After several days when Raj returns to the Rai family, he refuses to marry Shanti on the ground that he is going to marry Gauri (Sandhya Roy). The Rai family is devastated. In Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960), Raj Kapoor plays Raju, an innocent and kind-hearted wanderer who unwittingly becomes part of a gang of dacoits. Raju falls in love with Kammo (Padmini), the daughter of the leader of the gang. Raju is persuaded by Kammo and her father that the gang looks out for the interests of the poor. But Raju witnesses a murder on one of the looting sprees and he leaves the gang. Conflict arises when a gang member Raka (Pran) kills the leader and attempts to forcibly marry Kammo. Raju approaches the police for help and finally convinces the gang of dacoits to surrender to the police so that they can reform themselves as respectable members of society.

She runs away and takes shelter working as a nurse in a private hospital where she gives birth to a baby boy. Kedarnanth once again shows up here, forcing the Trustees of the hospital to fire her. She flees with her child, and ends up at a brothel where she must accept this profession or see her child starve to death. She manages to smuggle the child to a kind-hearted doctor Renuka Roy. While in prison, he gets word that his mother is dead, and his niece is still starving and alone, and attempts to break out, but is caught and gets five years added to his sentence. He attempts to break out again, and this time he gets an additional 7 years in jail, bringing the total to 14 years. After 14 years, Kundan roams around a city, trying to find shelter and food, but finds that his prison career following him around in the shape and form of Inspector Sher Singh. Good fortune comes to Kundan, when he meets with Gurudev, a kind-hearted samaritan, who helps him financially. Kundan is well settled now, and the people in his town want him to be the Mayor, which he accepts. He also meets with his ill niece, but is unable to save her. She leaves behind a daughter named Uma. Sher Singh enters his life, and gets Kundan on the run. Kundan and Uma ultimately settle down again, and the years roll by. Uma grows up and meets a young man named Amrit, who is involved in the freedom struggle to get the British to quit India, and thus in trouble with the police. Sher Singh comes looking after for Amrit, but instead finds Kundan. Jaspal's daughter, Ranjana, attempts to secure employment, but proud Jaspal will not hear of this. Ranjana gets employment, but she does not tell her father about it. Ranjana meets with a young man and both fall in love with each other. When this young man's father, Durgaprasad, comes to ask Jaspal for Ranjana's hand, Jaspal finds out that he is the new owner of Sheesh Mahal, and that Ranjana has been working as a maid there.
