While in C class Rajan happen to captivate the attention of his classmate, Dinky Kapoor and both fall in love; unfortunately Awasthi gets to find out about the mix-up between the Malhotras and decides to arrange for an examination that will bring their true colors to light but this does not help prompting Awasthi to enroll Rajan into a dancing competition and Raju into a quiz competition. Sultan is the Chief of Mujahd-E-Kashmir Front, and he deputes dreaded terrorist Mohammed Jalaudin Ghaznavi to abduct tourists in Mahabaleshwar and hold them for ransom. This ploy fails due to the timely action of Major Abdul Hamid of the National Security Guard, who not only saves the hostages, but also apprehends Ghaznavi. While being held in a cell, Ghaznavi attempts to negotiate his release with Home Minister Mahendra Suryavanshi to no avail. His comrades, led by Shabbir Khan and Aslam Marzban, abduct Suryavanshi's wife, Rukmani, who is the Principal of St. Mark's Sr. Secondary School, along with her son, Chaitanya; his girlfriend, Sapna, and a bus-load of students. Their demands are to ensure to release of Ghaznavi and others as well as free Kashmir from India. Abdul is once again deputed to deal with Shabbir, but ends up becoming their captive. Saraswati Batra (Waheeda Rehman), a graceful and devoted widow, has spent her life raising her three sons - Om, Jai, and Jagadish - in their ancestral home. Her more understanding husband (Raju Kher) supports Jai silently but firmly. After Jai graduates top of his class, Om and Saraswati urge him to return to India. However, Jai wants to stay in America, as he's offered a huge opportunity by an automobile company. But Om pleads with him to return, as he wants the brothers to stay together and needs his help with the growing financial burden. Jai reluctantly agrees, hoping to find work and marry Neetu. He is offered an 8-year contract but feels trapped by it and wants to head back to America, despite Om telling him to take it to help repay Shekhar's loan. Jai clashes with Om after urging him to sell their home as an alternative to pay their debts. Jai insists that Om is forcing the brothers to sacrifice their lives by clinging to outdated ideals and refusing to sell the house. Jagadish defends Om, reminding Jai that the house represents their father's dream and values, and that selling it would be a betrayal of everything he stood for. This confrontation marks the breaking point. Jai makes it clear he loves and respects Om but needs to go back to America to fulfill his dream. He returns to America, leaving Om emotionally devastated. After Jai's departure, Om - drowning in debt - approaches Tanya (Sheeba Chadha), the real estate agent who had once offered to buy the house. To his shock, Tanya reveals that she already owns the property. Her fiance, Shekhar, has legally seized the house under a clause in the loan agreement that Om had overlooked. Om had trusted Shekhar blindly, never expecting betrayal. Now, he and his family are evicted from the home Om protected for decades. Om is shattered - not just by losing the house, but by the fact that the friend he trusted most has exploited him. Shekhar, for his part, is also deeply hurt by Om's reaction. He reminds Om that when he gave him money, Om praised him, but now resents him for expecting repayment. He accuses Om of romanticizing morality while ignoring real-world responsibility, and despises his middle-class mentality. Meanwhile, Jagadish faces his own downfall. Manipulated by selfish college friends, he hacks into the university's system to retrieve exam papers. When one of the boys is caught, he betrays Jagadish to save himself. The scandal leads to Jagadish's expulsion and public disgrace. Om, already on the edge, breaks down and asks Jagadish to leave the house, further fracturing the family. Om, Ayesha, their five-year-old son, and Saraswati move into a small flat. The loss of the house is especially painful for Saraswati, who had longed to spend her final years surrounded by the memories of her late husband. With his standing in the music industry destroyed, Om seeks help in the music world. He turns to Ram Prasad (RP) - a former lift man Om once discovered and transformed into a musical sensation. But RP, now arrogant with success, refuses to help. Desperate, Om reaches out to KK, a disgraced singer whom he had replaced with RP for plagiarizing other artists' work. Despite their history, KK agrees to join Om, seeing his sincerity and broken spirit. Om also meets a notorious video pirate who used to illegally copy music videos, named Rahman. Touched by Om's decency - even in defeat - Rahman reforms and joins Om's new venture as an executive. Together, the three form a new music label named Saraswati. Built on second chances and raw talent, the label slowly rises. KK stages a massive comeback, and artists begin leaving Shekhar's label to join Om's. Infuriated, Shekhar publicly mocks Om for having "failed brothers" - one who fled abroad, and another expelled in disgrace. Om, pushed too far, slaps Shekhar in anger. In retaliation, Shekhar vows not to redevelop the house but to auction it off - just to humiliate Om. Back in America, Jai builds and sells his dream car for $2 million. During this time, Neetu sees Jai's quiet strength and unwavering integrity, and realizes her own selfishness. With her father's encouragement - who finally stands up to his wife - she reconciles with Jai. They return to India - Neetu transformed, grounded, and ready to embrace the family. Jagadish, now working as a pizza delivery boy in Bangalore thanks to a friend who supports him and takes him in, happens to deliver food to Mr. Pillai, the CEO of a major tech firm. When Pillai's company is hacked, Jagadish offers a solution: an anti-hacking program he has been developing on his own. Pillai is impressed and agrees to buy it. As the ancestral home goes up for public auction, Om arrives with all the money he's saved. Jai joins him, contributing his share. They place their bid - but a mysterious higher bidder outbids them. Defeated and heartbroken, they prepare to walk away. But just then, Jagadish walks in, poised and confident. The three brothers embrace, reunited at last. The winning bidder steps forward - and reveals he was representing Mr. Pillai. As it turns out, Jagadish sold his anti-hacking program to Pillai on one condition: the price of the software would be the exact amount needed to reclaim the family home. Overwhelmed, Saraswati watches her sons standing together once more. Her dream is fulfilled - not through money, but through unity, sacrifice, and love Shekhar, present at the auction, watches in silence. For the first time, he concedes defeat without resentment. He eventually meets Kiran and both renew their romance. Ranvir Choudhary (Vinod Khanna) does not appreciate the attentions of a poor man like Suraj on his daughter, and has Suraj brought up before him and introduced to his many friends, which include prominent lawyers, politicians, high ranking civil and municipal employees, the police commissioner as well as the state chief minister. Suraj is warned of dire consequences if he and his family do not leave town immediately. Suraj does not leave town, and hell descends on his family and himself. His mother is unable to purchase food and is publicly humiliated; his father is followed around by Ranvir's goons, harassed, and robbed, and then faces the ultimate humiliation of being publicly arrested, handcuffed, and imprisoned on charges of conspiring against the country and loses his job; and some of Suraj's friends exile him. With so much pressure, will Suraj relent and leave the city, or will he let his dad rot in prison? Vishwanath (Anupam Kher) is a multi-millionaire industrialist, living in a palatial house with his only child, a son named Vijay (Anil Kapoor). Vijay has recently returned to India, after studying in USA. Salim (Rakesh Bedi) is the driver and Badri (Sadhu Mehar) is the house servant. German (Satish Kaushik) is Vijay's childhood friend and partner. Vishwanath runs a factory that manufactures underground cables. The pampered Vijay has completed his education and now indulges in life's temptations to the extreme. Vijay tells Vishwanath that he does not want to join the family business and enter the same rat race that Vishwanath endured his entire life. Vijay says that he wants to enjoy life and his wealth. Vishwanath would like his son to get married and become responsible. Khairati Lal is manager in Vishwanath's factory who wants to marry his niece Anita (Mink Singh) to Vijay. Vishwanath starts searching for suitable brides for Vijay, but Vijay says that he wants a bride that he is compatible with and that could even take years to find. Vishwanath is livid at Vijay's insolence and starts eating sugar, which is expressly prohibited to him due to his diabetic condition. Vishwanath says that he sacrificed his entire life for Vijay and now Vijay wont even let him play with grandchildren, so he has no reason to live. Vijay agrees to marriage but puts a condition. Vijay wants the marriage to be on a contract basis for a year and, if he does not fall in love with his wife in that duration, the marriage will be annulled. Badri counsels Vishwanath to find a good girl and he is confident that with time, Vijay will fall in love and the condition of divorce will never be activated. Megha (Kajol) is Vishwanath's personal assistant in his office. She is a hardworking girl struggling to support her family. Vishwanath asks Megha to quit her job and marry his son, but she refuses when she hears Vijay's strange condition. Yashwant is the local loafer who wants to marry Megha, to take advantage of her financial misery. Megha's family is in dire financial straits and, so she has to reconsider Vishwanath's offer. In return for marrying Vijay, she asks for financial support for her family, which Vishwanath readily provides. Megha's family includes younger sister Maya (Gracy Singh), brother Sudhakar (Raju Shrestha), elder sister Manju (Sudha Chandran) and mother (Smita Jaykar). Manju is married to her husband (Adi Irani) but was returned home as she has a hole in her heart and needs expensive surgery. Vijay and Megha get married. After marriage, they live together and develop a friendly relationship. Megha works very hard, wholeheartedly cooperating, even kneeling on the steps of a temple to take care of Vijay when he is badly injured in an accident. Yet, at the end of the year, Vijay decides to call off the marriage, as agreed upon. Megha returns home very sad. After the separation, Vijay seems to be enjoying himself; but slowly and eventually, he starts to feel a longing for the presence of his devoted wife. Complications arise when Megha finds out that she is pregnant with Vijay's child. People in her neighborhood start to question her stay at her mother's house and the identity of the child's father. In order to support herself, Megha gets a job in a new company. To her surprise, when the company's managing director arrives, he turns out to be Vijay. Vijay buys the company by paying a huge amount to woo Megha. Vijay tries to convince Megha that he is a changed person now and wants her back. But, despite repeated convictions, Megha remains unconvinced as her faith in him is shattered. Vijay continues to try to convince her. But Megha does not miss any opportunity to show him that she does not care for him at all. Later, Megha and her family organize a 'Godh-Bharai' ceremony for the welfare of their upcoming child. Vishwanath and Vijay also attend the ceremony and give their gifts. Megha reveals Vijay to be her husband and tells all the guests about the marriage contract, insulting him. Vijay feels very bad. He explains that in the situation he is in, he can marry anyone and live happily. But he has made a mistake by entering into the marriage contract, he accepts this from his heart and even today he truly loves only Megha. This makes the situation clear to everyone. Vijay and his father come out after all the guests. Near the completion of her pregnancy, Megha learns that Khairati Lal (Shakti Kapoor) and Yashwant Kumar (Parmeet Sethi), who have been creating trouble for Vijay's company and had once attempted to kill Vijay, have escaped from jail. They are in search of Vijay, who had fired them from his father's company for fraud and forgery. Megha gets worried and tries to reach Vijay as soon as possible. On the way, she learns that this was a whole plan hatched by Vijay's friends to lure her towards her husband. In anger, Megha goes to insult Vijay. Meanwhile, Khairati Lal and Yashwant Kumar, who had come hiding behind Vijay in the office, actually attack Vijay suddenly and severely injure him by stabbing him in the stomach with a glass. But Megha thinks that Vijay is pretending to be injured. Megha turns around to leave after abusing Vijay, but Vijay turns towards her and screams in pain while pulling out a glass shard. Megha turns around and sees that his stomach is bleeding, and he is badly injured. Then she is convinced that Khairati and Yashwant have really attacked them. Megha runs towards him and slips and starts screaming in pain due to the fall as she is pregnant. Vijay ties a shirt on his stomach and gathers all his strength and takes Megha to the hospital. Their families also reach there. On one hand Vijay is being treated and on the other hand Megha gives birth. Megha gives birth to a healthy baby and wants to see Vijay first. Her bed is taken near Vijay's bed. Both of them meet happily. Vijay's father Vishwanath feels extremely happy by laying his grandson between them and shaking hands with all three as per his habit.

Arjun Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) and Pyare Mohan (Govinda) are police inspectors. They share a friendly bond. They go undercover and organize prison breaks to rescue criminals like Kalim Dhile (Razzak Khan) to get their crime masters like Sundar Kala (Avtar Gill). Arjun's sister, Seema (Raveena Tandon), is in love with Pyare. Arjun has no female companion and some petty comments are made about his age. Zorawar (Paresh Rawal) runs a business smuggling arms and diamonds, under a cover of being a statue maker. Once, in a hotel, he discovers that he is being spied upon and along with the cop spying on him, he wants to gets rid of Madhu (Divya Dutta), an eyewitness but she escapes. Madhu heads straight to the police station and gives her statement to Arjun and Pyare. Pyare drops her home. That night Zorawar attacks Madhu inside her home. Madhu's friend, Neha (Ramya Krishnan), witnesses Madhu's murder. Scared, and with the gangsters after her, she calls the police station and asks for Pyare, but since he is not there, Arjun is asked to go to her, and masquerade as Pyare, who had been described as a very good person to Neha by her dead friend. In a considerable amount of confusion, he takes her to Pyare's house and even gets to the extent of asking Pyare to masquerade as Arjun. For a few days Arjun decides to stay at Pyare's apartment, as Pyare. While Pyare is asked to stay at Arjun's house to protect his family. Arjun starts to fall in love with Neha. Zorawar and his men attack Neha, but Arjun and Pyare team up to rescue her, but Zorawar manages to escape. Neha runs into Seema at a mall and it emerges that they both love Pyare. They complain to the police commissioner and it emerges that Arjun was being Pyare to Neha to gain her trust. Two petty thieves, Bade Miyan (Amitabh Bachchan) and Chote Miyan (Govinda), who are look-alike of Arjun and Pyare respectively, arrive in town. Confusion ensue when every crime the crooks commit are blamed on Arjun and Pyare. Things goes further downhill when Shyamlal (Anupam Kher), the police commissioner, is also thrashed by the doubles (Shyamlal had found Bade and Chote in a red light area and was stopping them as he thought they were Arjun and Pyare. Bade and Chote thrashed him badly). Arjun and Pyare are blamed for messing up security operation of Madhuri Dixit (herself). Arjun and Pyare are asked to meet Madhuri to register an underworld complaint, but Bade and Chote meet her accidentally and are taken for Arjun/Pyare. Both are kicked when they both proposition Madhuri for marriage. Even Seema and Neha mistake Bade and Chote for Arjun and Pyare. Neha finds Bade at the jewelers (where he has just been handed the necklace that Arjun ordered for Seema's Bday) and brings him home. Chote follows him home. Arjun reaches the Jewellers later and finds the necklace is missing. Later Bade and Chote realize that they are copy cats of 2 police officers. They are deputed by commissioner to protect the other half of the Kohinoor diamond which is on display in India in a museum. When Chote and Bade find out, they pose as police to inspect the museums security under office Hamak Jaykar (Asrani). Hamak shows Chote and Bade all security measures and ways to defeat it. Arjun and Pyare are directly blamed for the theft. Zorawar wanted to smuggle this diamond and hence is pissed when the news of theft is published. Arjun and Pyare further land in trouble when Zorawar kidnaps Seema and asks for the diamond and Neha in return. Zorawar confronts Bade and Chote for the return of the diamond and parade Seema in front of them. Bade and Chote want to buy time and agree to bring Neha to him and leave the diamond with Zorawar to keep Seema safe. Arjun and Pyare, who have been arrested, are saved by the arrival of Bade and Chote, and promise to get Neha and Seema back. Bade and Chote arrive at Zorawar's hideout and stall them while Arjun and Pyare come with police force and everyone at the hideout is arrested. The crooks leave after apologizing to Neha and Seema for the confusion. However, some of Zorawar's men hijack the police van which is taking Zorawar and his associates to jail. They are stopped on the way by Bade and Chote, asking for a lift. The latter realizes who really are in the van and proceed to badly thrash Zorawar and his men and return him to jail. Arjun and Pyare are criticized for their mistake regarding the hijacking of the van and the two crooks are given a job in the police force by the commissioner himself. The film ends with Arjun and Pyare ending up being demoted to the post of traffic police officers and Bade and Chote taking their place as police inspectors.

Indu lives a middle-class life with her widower dad. She attends college, meets Raj, and and they fall in love with each other. Raj follows Indu everywhere, including a picnic, to the chagrin of her professor, but Indu shuns her and sings and dances with Raj, then they take off on his motorbike. When Raj gets better, he is discharged, finds out that Indu is still alive, and goes to meet her and attempts to get intimate with her. It is then her husband, none other than Dr. Verma himself walks in, sees them together, and decides to kill them. He succeeds in killing Raj, but before he can kill Indu, he is arrested and institutionalized in the very same hospital where he works. The movie is about the love between a Tamil man, Vasu (Kamal Haasan), and a North Indian woman, Sapna (Rati Agnihotri), who are neighbors in Goa. They come from totally different backgrounds and can hardly speak the other's language. When Vasu and Sapna admit their love, there is chaos in their homes they face an unexpected test of their love. The movie begins with an old, ruined building near the beautiful beach of Goa. The dilapidated walls of the building are covered with many names, but two names stand apart from the rest---Vasu and Sapna. Vasu is a happy, carefree young lad who belongs to a Tamil family. He resigns his job after his boss scolds him and he returns to home in Goa. His orthodox Tamilian father V. Sivaramakrishnan (Poornam Vishwanathan) is always at loggerheads with the Hindi-speaking neighbor family. His mom Vandana (Athili Lakshmi). Jagannath (Satyen Kappu) is Siva's good friend (& owner of the house) and frequently comes to their house. Siva is angry with Vasu as he came home after quitting his well paying job. The family has a beautiful daughter named Sapna, a college student. Her father Kundanlal (Arvind Deshpande) and his wife (Shubha Khote) While being stalked by a perverted librarian (Sunil Thapa) on a lonely road, Sapna finds Vasu jogging and starts a conversation with him. Seeing this, the librarian goes away. Sapna thanks Vasu for pretending to be her friend, but he reveals that he doesn't understand Hindi. Vasu wants to make friends with her, but he unfortunately meets an accident and is admitted at the hospital. A shocked and sad Sapna sends him a gift- a mask with her name behind it. Despite the nasty fights between their families, Vasu and Sapna fall madly in love with each other. They get to know each other, experiencing the joy and innocence of first love. One day however, Sapna misunderstands Vasu (when he tries to kiss her on a lonely beach, without her permission) that he too is just lustful and does not love her truly, and she breaks up with him. Despite Vasu's efforts to make her understand his love, Sapna ignores him and is still angry. A week later, Sapna finds Vasu awake all night looking at her window hoping that she would forgive him. Heartbroken at seeing him like that, Sapna forgives him and signals him by turning her room light off and on repeatedly. They meet the next day and Sapna expresses her love for Vasu by kissing his hand. The lovers unite and they go around the beaches, forts, waterfalls and scenic places of Goa. While returning home late night, Vasu's bike runs out of petrol. So they pose as a newly married couple and ask for a lift in a cab. But to their shock, Sapna's father is in the car and he takes her home immediately! Vasu and Sapna keep meeting each other and fall in love even more. One day when Sapna returns from college after meeting Vasu, she finds the perverted librarian at her home. The man has secretly clicked pictures of her and Vasu together and shows it to her parents. Burning with rage, Sapna's mother forbids her from seeing Vasu and accompanies her everywhere she goes. Heartbroken, Vasu makes a plan and stealthily meets Sapna during her college lunch break. They go to a hotel for lunch and Vasu stops the lift halfway to spend sometime with Sapna. He sings a song for her using the broken Hindi he knows and they get carried away. This leads to a huge crowding at the hotel lift and someone calls the police! Vasu and Sapna's families are informed about this and they are mad with rage! Sapna is locked at home and Vasu's father scolds him very badly. Despite the opposition, Vasu boldly goes and meets Sapna in her home in the presence of her parents and expresses his love for her by kissing her on the lips. Sapna's mother screams and calls everyone claiming that Vasu is ruining their family honor. Finally, both the families meet and Vasu and Sapna clearly affirm their love for each other. Their families agree to get them married on one condition-that they should separate from each other for one year without any kind of contact. After such a period, if they still want to be together, they can get married. During the year there should be no contact between them whatsoever. Vasu and Sapna reluctantly agree to the contract hoping that they can finally get married after one year. Vasu goes to Hyderabad for a job, while Sapna stays back in Goa. During their year of separation, Vasu writes a letter every day to Sapna, in which he expressed his pain and feelings, but doesn't send it to her because of the contract. He learns to speak Hindi fluently from a young widow named Sandhya (Madhavi), to make Sapna's parents happy. And to drown his pain of separation, he also learns dance from Sandhya. On the other hand, Sapna visits all the places where she and Vasu used to go. Each time she walks past those places, all their memories come alive. She also visits a rocky hill by the beach, where their names 'Vasu' and 'Sapna' are painted on the highest rock. In order to make Sapna forget Vasu, her mother destroys the audio tape that he had given her. She also burns Vasu's only photo that Sapna had. In response, Sapna writes Vasu's name all over her bedroom wall, making her family even more angry. Sapna goes on a college trip to Mangalore, where her mother sends her relative Chakram (Rakesh Bedi) (whom she had called from Lucknow to woo Sapna and get her to forget Vasu) to spy on her. Chakram wants to marry Sapna, but she doesn't like him. Coincidentally, Vasu also comes to Mangalore due to a job assignment. He spots Sapna and follows her to her hotel room, but bumps into Chakram, who lies that he and Sapna are married! A shocked Vasu meets Sapna's college friends and asks about her, but they also tell that Chakram and Sapna are soon to be married. Vasu is heartbroken and proposes to Sandhya. She readily accepts and their wedding is fixed. The librarian meets Vasu in Hyderabad (he was attending a book fair) and learns Vasu is engaged to Sandhya. He goes to Goa and relates the incident to Sapna and her parents. When coming to meet him, she finds all the letters he wrote to Sapna, and discovers the truth. Sandhya goes to Goa and meets Sapna and finds that she is not married and is waiting for Vasu. Seeing their true love, Sandhya sacrifices her love and decides to unite Vasu and Sapna She tells the truth to Vasu and cancels their wedding, urging him to go and meet his beloved Sapna as their one-year contract was getting over. Sandhya's older brother Beni hears that the wedding is canceled and thinks that Vasu cheated his sister. In a drunken state, he phones his criminal friend in Goa and asks him to 'completely get rid' of Vasu! Sandhya gets to know that Beni has issued the order to kill Vasu. She confronts Beni, who admits that he was intoxicated. But the Goa criminal contact has already left. Sandhya calls Sapna's mother, since Vasu's house did not have a phone. Sapna's mom promises to give the message that Vasu is in danger, but then decides to keep the news to herself. Vasu reaches home, but Sapna is at the beach. The librarian follows Sapna to the beach and wants to sexually assault her for all the insults over the months meted out to him. Meanwhile Vasu reaches the beach and is confronted by Beni's criminal friend and his gang. The librarian sexually assaults Sapna brutally and runs away on his bike. Meanwhile the gang is about to stab Vasu, but run away after hearing the librarian's bike. Sapna and Vasu unite, but both are badly injured. They relate each other's tale and fall off the cliff in a tight embrace.. They are killed on impact.
