Bihar-based Muslim Manzur Ahmed (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) and his family was migrated to East Pakistan after the partitioning of India in 1947. However, after the formation of the state of Bangladesh in 1971, he and several other people were forced to re-locate to the western part of Pakistan. To do this by land, they will have to cross India. The route from Dhaka leads to Guwahati in India then to Delhi then to Ajmer then to Bhuj, and then on to Haji Peer in Pakistan. They get as far as Bhuj, but afterward they are assisted by an agent known only as "Refugee" (Abhishek Bachchan), who helps them trek their way across the Great Rann of Kutch to Pakistan. Makkad (Ashish Vidyarthi) is Refugee's handler and brings clients for him, in exchange for a commission. Refugee considers his clients as mere items of luggage and refuses to be emotionally involved with them and their stories. Then he meets Nazneen Ahmed (Kareena Kapoor), the young daughter of Manzur Ahmed, and he forgets this rule and falls in love with her. Police on both sides of the border are aware of the illegal refugee traffic and the Indian BSF led by Raghuvir Singh regularly questions Refugee and his old father Jaan Muhammad (Anupam Kher) on border crossings. Jaan is married to Amina (Reena Roy). Manzur and his family stay at Jaan's brother Atta Mohammad's (Avtar Gill) place on the other side of the border. Pakistani rangers led by Ashraf search Atta's house, who tells Ashraf that Manzur and his family have come from another village for Naaz's marriage. Tausif (Mukesh Tiwari) is Ashraf's lieutenant. Manzur's mother dies due to the strain of the crossing. Tausif has his eye on Naaz's younger sister Salma, but Ashraf stops him and asks him to leave the family alone. Refugee crosses the border regularly to see Naaz. The journey to Pakistan changes the course of Refugee's life -- he falls in love with the pretty Naaz. The girl too reciprocates his feelings. Naaz wants to create a home with Refugee in Pakistan. But the lovers face an uphill task, for: (i) Naaz is now settled in Pakistan, while he stays in India. (ii) The head of the security keeping a strict vigil on the border of Pakistan. Ashraf (Sunil Shetty), a Pakistani, falls for the innocent charms of Naaz and wants to marry her. Naaz's family agrees to this match, not realizing that their daughter's heart yearns for Refugee. (iii) The Border Security Force in India has learned of the illegal activities of Refugee and wants to take him to task. Shadab is the one who is passing information to the BSF rangers, in exchange for money. On one crossing, Raghuvir manages to spot Refugee crossing the border and shoots him in the leg, but Refugee escapes by hiding in a hole in the ground, covered by foliage. On the Indian side, Refugee is cared for by Sikh priest (Puneet Issar), who hides him in a cave. Refugee crosses the border once again to visit Nazneen Ahmed. Due to a miscommunication, Naaz believes that her parents have agreed to her marriage to Refugee, while they had suggested her wedding with Ashraf. One day, Refugee assists four men (led by Gul Hamid (Sudesh Berry)) to enter the Indian side of the border. These men then enlist the help of Mr. Muhammad's other son Shadab (Shadaab Khan) to get to Delhi. Shadab is addicted to gambling and liquor and does all illegal things to fund his expensive tastes. Shortly thereafter, explosions take place in trains, buses, and buildings in the Indian capital. Shadab returns home with Rs 1 Lakh in cash, which he was given to place a bomb in train. Jaan throws Shadab out of the house for betraying the nation. After the blasts, villages on both sides are rounded up. Tausif wants to arrest Munzir for being an illegal immigrant, but Ashraf stops him. Tausif informs Ashraf that he is willing to break the law for Naaz, who has already slept with someone else. Naaz also affirms that she has only ever loved Refugee. Refugee crosses the border again and meets Naaz. Naaz requests Refugee to take her with him since her father wants to marry her to Ashraf. Munzir informs Ashraf that Naaz is crossing the border with Refugee. While crossing the border through Rann they are captured by Pakistanis rangers. Refugee is beaten up and sent to India on a camel. Ashraf leaves to return Naaz home, while Tausif beats up Refugee mercilessly before sending him back on a camel. Tausif tells Naaz that Ashraf was the one who broke Refugee before returning him to India. Naaz confronts Ashraf for torturing Refugee before sending him back to India. In retaliation, Ashraf confronts Tausif, and kills him after a brutal battle. The Indian BSF led by Raghuvir Singh (Jackie Shroff) captures him and treats him in hospital. The Indians informs him that he unknowingly helped terrorists cross into India and caused several deaths. Refugee confronts his father Jaan, who confirms Refugee's involvement in helping terrorists to cross the border. Refugee joins the BSF and fights the terrorists who laid siege to his village. The terrorists led by Gul Hamid plan to capture the village and assimilate in Pakistan. Jaan resists the terrorists and his own brother Atta who was supporting the terrorists. Atta shoots Jaan and he dies, but due to Jaan's death, the villagers refuse to support the terrorists. Shadab escapes the village to inform the BSF but is shot dead as well. Refugee leads the attack on the village and kills both Atta and Gul Hamid. Naaz tries to cross the border several times but is captured by the Pakistani Rangers. Ashraf agrees to take Naaz to the Haji Peer Mela, which is an event celebrated jointly by Muslim families on both sides of the border. The event is attended by both BSF and the Pakistani Rangers. Naaz runs into Refugee at the event, and Ashraf brings a priest to get them married. Raghuvir allows Refugee to bring Naaz to India, but she is heavily pregnant and goes into labor at the border crossing. The film ends with Nazneen Ahmed giving birth to Refugee's child at the border between the two nations. Indian and Pakistani BSF officers discuss the child's nationality in a lighter vein.

Kaushalya (Sulabha Deshpande) is widow who adopts an abandoned child on the steps of a temple. Kaushalya works at Mr. CK Oberoi's house. CK congratulates Kaushalya for her courage and decides to support the kid and make him powerful. Oberoi raises a child as his own as it was his love child, and the child Vijay Kumar (Ajay Devgn) grows to live up to his expectations. Vijay stands up for the rights of the downtrodden and helpless and stands up to bullies in college. Vijay starts his own construction company and starts competing against Oberoi constructions led by Jagat Mama (Paresh Rawal). Jagat is livid that Vijay is winning contracts that traditionally went to Oberois. CK supports Vijay 100% and admonishes Jagat when he tries to bully Vijay. CK's wife is Sharda (Reena Roy). Raja (Ajinkya Deo) is CK and Sharda's son. Madhu (Raveena Tondon) is the daughter of CK's friend Judge Amarnath (Satyendra Kapoor). Madhu meets Vijay when she was travelling with Raja to a dance competition. Raja's car breaks down and Vijay was fixing his own car. Madhu thinks he is a mechanic. Turns out Raja was driving with his hand brakes on. Annu (Guddi Maruti) is Madhu's best friend. Annu is a journalist and is hunting for Vijay's interview, who is a noted industrialist. Madhu barges into Vijay's cabin an interviews an employee of his, thinking that the employee is Vijay. The employee flirts with Madhu and she is disgusted. that evening, Vijay is the chief guest (invited by CK Oberoi and introduced by him) at Madhu's dance performance and that's how she finds out who is the real Vijay. Vijay professes his love for Madhu, and she agrees. They start dating, which Raja sees. Jagat fills poison in Raja's heart and Raja bribes an employee (Rajesh Puri) of Vijay to get their tender details. Raja starts winning contracts that used to go to Vijay. Vijay finds the mole, but instead of firing him, he takes on all responsibility of the employee's daughter's marriage. The employee is ashamed and vows his loyalty to Vijay. Meanwhile CK admonishes Raja for using underhand tactics against Vijay. Raja is aghast and questions his relationship with Vijay, to which Sharda objects. Raja and Jagat pay Sampat (Kiran Kumar), a mill union leader, to conduct a strike in Vijay's mill. But Vijay is a friend of the workers, and the strike fails. Humiliated, Sampat tries to kill Vijay by dropping heavy machine on him inside his factory. But Vijay escapes and attacks Sampat and his goons at their hideout and Sampat is arrested by the police. Vijay is up for election as President of the Mill Owner's Association, but when he finds that CK is standing for the post, he withdraws his nomination publicly. At the party, Raja tries to insult Vijay over his unknown origins and his beggar type upbringing, but Vijay turns the tables saying that he is funding the party for CK and that Raja and Jagat are eating his food. Raja is humiliated. Raja alleges to Sharda that Vijay is CK's illegal son, and she slaps him, hard. Jagat tells Sharda to get Raja married to Madhu. But Kaushalya gets there first and secures Madhu for Vijay. when CK and Sharda get there, CK supports the decision to wed Madhu to Vijay. Sharda is angry at this decision. Jagat then instigates Amarnath that Vijay is an illegal son of God knows who, and hence cannot be socially acceptable. Amarnath cancels the wedding with Vijay, and Amarnath begs Sharda to accept Madhu as bride for Raja. Kaushalya has a heart attack and dies from the shock. Madhu reaches Vijay and vows to be with him. Raja attacks Vijay, and this time Vijay beats him back. Raja is bloodied and Vijay drops him back at his home. Sharda goes to confront Vijay, and this is the first time she actually looks at him. Vijay looks exactly like a guy named Dev whom she used to date, back before she was married to CK. Sharda realizes that Vijay is her son from Dev and not CK's. Sharda rushes home to confront Jagat and says that he was wrong to tell her all those yrs ago that her child was born dead. Raja attacks Vijay and injures him badly, but CK intervenes at the right time and saves him. CK reports to the police and tells them to arrest Raja, Jagat and Sampat for the attack on Vijay. CK gives his own blood to save Vijay. He confronts Sharda, who admits that Vijay was born to her before her marriage to CK. And Jagat lied to her saying that she gave birth to a dead son. Raja and Jagat abduct Sharda and CK and want CK to sign over all assets to Raja. CK signs the papers, but then Raja wants to forcefully marry Madhu, which CK objects to. Raja slaps Sharda, which wakes Vijay up in his bed at the hospital. Vijay attacks and saves everyone. CK picks a gun to shoot Raja, but Vijay stops this by taking the bullet himself. All is forgiven and Vijay married Madhu.

.Sharad and Punam are devastated when they learn that Punam can not be a mother. Ganga helps Punam to solve this problem. Unfortunately, when Sharad gets a job, they find that Ganga helped them for hidden reasons and it is time for payback.

The marriage is set to take place within a few days, and preparations are on. Then Devi's brother, Nandlal, comes across a secret about Mohan's life, and puts a stop to this marriage. Devi finds out that her brother is behind this, and tells Mohan, and they plan to get married in secret. That night Mohan does not show up, and Devi is devastated. Two siblings attempt to avenge the death of their father and elder sister. But the sister believes in the law while the brother believes in administering justice himself. Jan Nissar Akhtar Khan works as a Forest Officer, and lives with his wife Zakhiya. One day while on duty he comes across some poachers who were cutting sandal wood trees illegally. When challenged, they retaliate, a struggle ensues, and one of them, Ram Gupta, gets killed. Khan is charged with killing him, tried in Court, and sentenced to several years in prison. His shocked and devastated wife kills herself. Years later, an angry and embittered Khan is released from prison. One day he comes across another young man, Vijay Singh, and finds out that he is struggling with taking vengeance against two men who had traumatized and killed some of his family members, and decides to help him. It is then Khan finds out that Gupta is still alive and decides to kill him, quite dramatically in the same courtroom where he was convicted for his murder. Watch how this action will effect Khan's future, and Vijay's plan for avenging his family.
