Javed is a widower who is bringing up his 4 children (Fatima Sana Shaikh is one of the kids) with a lot of love and effort while Arun is his carefree, hotheaded, trigger-happy albeit well-meaning subordinate and brother-like friend. Arun doesn't like Javed's four children, just like he doesn't like any kid, nor do the four children like him and they keep playing pranks on Arun whenever they meet him. Champak (Dilip Joshi) is Arun's friend from college and stays with him in his house. KKV (Krishan Kant Virmani) (Nirmal Pandey) is a local drug lord that the entire police department have always been desperate to bring him to justice. But due to KKV's broad connection in the police department, nobody ever manages to find any solid proof against him. Bipasha (Sahila Chadha), Inspector Sawant (Raj Zutshi) and Inspector Rajendra (Suresh Chatwal) are also part of Javed's team. With the help of an informer, police catch KKV's group red handed while he is dealing drugs. But later someone replaces the drugs detained from KKV with sugar, making KKV released, which makes it very clear that someone in the police department is working for KKV. The Police Commissioner (Akash Khurana) is eager to find out that traitor. Javed figures out that someone switched the drug packets from KKV's raid with sugar packets and knows that this was an inside job. Geeta (Juhi Chawla) is Javed's friend. Once she meets Arun and falls in love with him at the first sight, but Arun shows no special interest in her and always avoids her. While on a subsequent drug raid (Which Arun and Javed lead together. Javed had given his bullet proof jacket to Arun before the raid), Javed is shot dead by an unknown assailant (who knew Javed and attacked him while he was alone). Before the mission, Javed wrote a letter to Arun, asking Arun to take care of his four kids if he cannot survive. As Javed's best friend, in spite of not liking kids, Arun decides to adopt Javed's children, instead of sending them to an orphanage. Arun also engages with Geeta so that he can have her helping him taking care of those children. Arun also develops his feeling for Geeta gradually. Arun's life becomes difficult as his salary is not enough to support so many people. In a visit to KKV's club to warn him, Arun unexpectedly finds that Geeta is the dancer at that club. Arun becomes angry with Geeta, not only because he thinks bar dancer is a filthy job, but also because he thinks Geeta has long been cheating him by pretending to be decent. When he returns home later, he confronts Geeta and questions her for that, but the children all say that Geeta was with them all day, making Arun have to believe that the bar dancer is another person that simply looks like Geeta. Arun has to back off when the kids allege that maybe Arun was the one who shot Javed, but there is no proof of that. Arun is asked to vacate Javed's government flat as that is for serving police officers only. Under the pressure of living, Arun robs KKV. He takes a big amount of money from KKV, which he knew was dirty money, and buys a big house for his family. Arun gets arrested immediately, not for the robbery, but however for illegal drug possession (The same drugs that went missing from police possession while Javed was investigating the case). He is charged with being KKV's spy as police identifies that the drugs found in his house belongs to KKV. Obviously, Arun is trapped by someone, but he does not know who trapped him. In the court. Geeta also testifies against Arun, however, not as his fiance, but as a secret police officer who worked at KKV's bar -- yes, the bar dancer whom Arun saw before -- and the witness of Arun's robbery. Arun is therefore suspended from duty until further trial. Arun now does not believe anyone anymore; he decides to find the killer of Javed and the spy for KKV by his own. He questions a police officer (the guy in charge of the evidence locker room from where the KKV drugs were stolen in the first place) at his home, whom he believes to be corrupted. The officer admits he is a spy for KKV, but follows the order of JD, another police officer. He also says he does not know who killed Javed, but JD does. Arun kills him and heads for JD's house. On his way to JD's house, Arun calls Geeta for help, who was with the Police Commissioner when answering the phone call. With the permission of the Commissioner, Geeta joins Arun to question JD, only to find JD was killed right before they arrive. They believe the Police Commissioner is the spy as he is the only third person that knows they are heading for JD. Arun rushes to the Police Commissioner's house and thrashes him, but the latter denies being a spy for KKV. Geeta goes to CBI Chief's Diwakar (Keith Stevenson) house to report the situation, who is the superior of the Police Commissioner, but she finds KKV is in the Chief's house with him, making her immediately realize the Chief is the real spy as he might have known the plan from the Commissioner. The Chief and KKV try to kill Geeta, but she manages to escape. Geeta visits Arun and the Commissioner and tells them her findings about the Chief. The Commissioner is shocked to know that, and he knows that the Chief is going to leave the country very soon. They arrive at the airport to stop the Chief from leaving. During the gunfight at the airport, KKV kills the Chief when taking him as a hostage and inspector Sawant (Raj Zutshi) kills KKV and gets killed by Arun, who reveals himself as the killer of Javed at the final scene.

Reema, realising that Ravi and Roma are involved with each other, quietly moves herself out of the competition and hiding her sadness, joins in the festivities of her sister's marriage. But Roma in her typical fashion of losing interest once she has what she wants, has set her sights on more than marriage and living the rest of her life as Mrs. Ravi Saxena. In the meanwhile, a published picture of hers gets a top photographer interested in her. He encourages her to have a photo session done against the wishes of her fiancee. It doesn't take much to convince Roma. She is convinced that she has a glorious career ahead of her in fashion and films and ditches Ravi at the "mandap" (wedding place). She leaves behind a note telling Ravi that she is confident that he will wait for her, but since the film producer won't, she is leaving. And that she will come back as soon as the movie is over and get married to him. Reema and the rest of the family are stunned and look to Ravi for his reaction. They are further shocked when Ravi controls his feelings and instantaneously decides to marry Reema instead. Reema seeing the man she loves in pain cannot refuse him and agrees to the marriage. Reema and Ravi start their marriage under a cloud but slowly Ravi discovers that true worth of Reema, and she in turn blossoms under the attention of the man she loves and from a shy, timid and self effacing young girl grows into a beautiful confident woman. But life is not all roses and wine and just as their marriage was coming close to becoming a beautiful reality, Roma comes back into their lives. In her supremely selfish way she forgets the pain she caused Ravi, Reema and the family by running away on her wedding day. Instead she accuses Reema and Ravi of stabbing her in the back and walks out of Ravi's house cursing them with life filled with unhappiness for being unfaithful to her. Reema's uncertainties surface again. All her life she has lived in the shadow of her sister and given in to her every whim. The tenuous bond between Ravi and Reema is stretched thin again and they are back in their separate bedrooms with Roma's almost palpable presence like a wall between them. But Roma has no intentions of giving up with just the curses. Her alienation from her family and an attempted suicide and her relying on Reema's selflessness and genuine love for her, ensure that she lands in Reema and Ravi's marital home as an invalid. The rest of the film tells of how she slowly becomes blatant in making a play for Ravi. And how Ravi slowly succumbs to her manipulation. Or does he? And does Reema finally learn to fight back? Does love unite Reema and Ravi or is Roma finally victorious? That is revealed only in the last reel of "AAINA".

The heads are worried that somebody is picking off their gang members one by one. Police Inspector Amar (Vinod Khanna) goes on a daring drug bust, ending in the arrest of notorious underworld criminals Bansi and Girdhar. Amar's work goes down the drain as the criminals dodge the law and are set free. The lawyer is able to argue that when Amar apprehended the 2 men, he was not in his police uniform, and he did not declare that he is a police officer before arresting them. The lawyer claims that Bansi and Girdhar had withdrawn cash from the bank earlier that day for payroll and got scared when they saw a plain clothes person chasing them. Barrister Shrikant Sharma (Vinod Mehra) is Amar's well-wisher and advises him to remain calm. Amar says that when the law fails, ordinary citizens are forced to take the law in their own hands. Amar says that one day, one crazy person will kill these criminals who are not punished by the law. On cue, a mysterious vigilante shoots Bansi and Girdhar dead. Amar's senior DSP (Shafi Inamdar) assigns him a desk job and appoints Sub-Inspector Reema Kapoor (Dimple Kapadia) as Amar's assistant. Havaldar (Johnny Lever) also works with Amar at the police station. Reema is a very clumsy person and causes chaos wherever she goes. Amar and Reema fall in love with each other and Amar introduces her to his mother (Sushma Seth) and friend, Nitin (Jackie Shroff). Nitin is a journalist and publishes articles against crime and criminals in the city. Nitin lives with his mother (Seema Deo). Nisha (Sonam) is in love with Nitin. Nisha is the daughter of Shrikant. Shrikant wants Nisha to be an independent woman and does not want her to marry Nitin. He makes Nisha realize that Nitin is not in love with her. Meanwhile, a vigilante wreaks havoc in the city, killing the members of the underworld. When Raghunandan is murdered by the vigilante, Reema is in the building, and she gives chase to the vigilante. The vigilante manages to get away and Reema is met by Amar who happened to be in the neighborhood. Next, the vigilante goes after Bosco and once again manages to escape Reema who had guessed correctly that the vigilante would pursue Bosco. After the vigilante escaped, Reema is met by Amar, who saves her from drowning in the swimming pool. Rita (Huma Khan) was with both Bosco and Raghunandan when they were killed by the vigilante. This leads Shiv Saran to believe that she knew the vigilante and he kills her and throws her body into the ocean. The body is discovered by the police and Amar finds Shiv Saran's neck chain in Rita's hands. Amar arrests Shiv Saran from his casino. Once again, the lawyer argues that the locket could have belonged to anyone, and the confession by Shiv Saran was coerced in custody. Shiv Saran is released from custody. Reema stumbles upon Amar's closet, where she finds a helmet and a jacket worn by the vigilante. She brings the matter to the notice of Amar's superiors. Amar is suspended and charged with multiple homicides. Amar's mother also throws him out of the house. Turns out the DSP was in cahoots with Shiv Saran and Girja Shankar. Nitin comes to console Amar, but both are attacked by Shiv Saran. In the attack, Nitin is seriously injured, and Amar pursues Shiv Saran and corners him at gun point. Reema arrives and stops Amar from shooting Shiv Saran. As they argue, the vigilante arrives and shoots Shiv Saran dead. Before Reema can respond, Amar takes a shot at the vigilante and injures him, but the vigilante manages to get away. The vigilante falls from his bike after a distance, and it is revealed to be Nitin. A van comes with a doctor Abdul Rehman (Anjan Srivastav), picks Nitin and leaves. Girja and DSP discuss how to find the vigilante and decide to orchestrate things in such a way that Amar starts hating the vigilante and that way Amar would be the one hunting the vigilante on their behalf. Reema and Amar get engaged and their engagement is attended by Reema's uncle Judge Kapoor (A. K. Hangal). Kapoor sees Nitin and remembers him as a murderer named Jai Kishan from an earlier case in his career. Kapoor narrates the incident to Amar and Shrikant. Kapoor says that Jai Kishan was on trial for the murder of 5 innocents. Jai Kishan was sentenced to death, but the van carrying him to jail had an accident and he died. That is when a person wearing the same clothes as a vigilante attacks the engagement party. In the attack Amar's mother and Reema's uncle Judge Kapoor are both killed. When the attack took place, Nitin was out of the party venue to run an errand. The man pretending to be the vigilante is Girja himself. Girja attacks many other innocent people and in one instance Reema sees the mark on his hand. Amar now starts to doubt Nitin and confronts him at his home. Nitin accepts that he has killed 11 such people who were not punished by law but says that he did not kill Amar's mother or Reema's uncle as they were killed by the person who wanted to defame the vigilante. Nitin claims that he is not alone, and many people like him have played the role as well. Nitin takes Amar to an underground society which is headed by Shrikant. Before Amar could arrest them, DSP arrives at the location and arrests Amar along with the other terrorists, including Nitin. The matter goes to court where Shrikant argues that killing people who were already murderers and criminals is not against the law. These were people who had escaped punishment due to the loopholes in law and all they did was to provide justice to their victims. Jai Kishan says that he was friends with Nitin, who had died due to a drugs overdose. The drugs business in the city was run by Bosco and his associates. At court, Reema sees the mark on Girja's hand and identifies him as the person who killed the innocent people, pretending to be the vigilante. The DSP abducts Reema but is seen by Nisha. Nisha informs Shrikant, Jai Kishan and Amar about how Girja is the real killer and how DSP abducted Reema. Amar and Jai Kishan escaped police custody at the court and went after Girja and DSP. In the fight, Girja turns on the DSP and shoots him. The DSP has a change of heart and asks Amar to take him to court, where he gives testimony against Girja. Girja apprehends Amar and Jai Kishan and takes them to court as escaped convicts. But Amar had anticipated this and hidden Reema and the DSP. Reema brings DSP to court, who identifies Girja as the real killer. Girja tries to escape, but is killed by Amar and Jai Kishan.
