Jeeva (Bobby Deol) is from a struggling family. He falls in love with Kiran (Malaika Arora Khan). Due to their differences in social class, Kiran's father does not approve of their relationship. Jeeva later becomes one of India's most dangerous assassins in Bombay with Madan Bhai as his handler, and the only person who knows his identity. Jeeva is a conscientious killer when he takes the contract to eliminate Pankaj Kharbanda (Pramod Moutho), who wanted to grab the slum land by displacing poor people. The slum dwellers gathers Rs 5 Lakhs for Jeeva's fees, but he charges them only Rs 1 per bullet. Jeeva then craftily lures Pankaj out of his secure office by mounting an attack and then eliminates him with ease. Jeeva stays in a society and is known to the neighbors as a doctor. Jeeva lives with Scorpions in his apartment. Jeeva lives next to the Bali family. The father Vikas Bali (Ishrat Ali) works for a corrupt police officer named Devraj Khatri (Ashish Vidyarthi) who works in the drug trade. Devraj confronts Vikas for adulterating drugs by 50% and supplying that to Devraj's customers. Devraj finds this out when one of his regular customer complains about the quality of the drugs supplied. Devraj wants Vikas to admit how much money he made, but Vikas maintains that he did nothing of the sort. But secretly Vikas admits to his wife that he mixed the drugs to earn some extra money to fulfill her desires for material possessions and to separate her and Kiran (by getting Kiran a different apartment as he cannot stand the daily bickering between Kiran and her stepmother. Kiran Bali (Rani Mukherji) is the youngest daughter of the family and strongly dislikes them. She has a stepmother (Dolly Bindra), who mistreats Kiran and has a bias in favor of her own daughter Nikki. Kiran's brother Vijay (Sachin Khedekar) is coming to town to meet her. Kiran tries to befriend Jeeva many times, but he is too engrossed in his killing to have any time for her. S.K. Puri (Police Commissioner) (Avtar Gill) wants to arrest this unknown assassin who is causing deep embarrassment to the police department as he is able to take-out high-profile targets with ease, without being seen, and without leaving any evidence for the police to lead to him. One day, Kiran is in Jeeva's apartment delivering milk to him. While she is there Devraj Khatri comes to Bali's apartment and brutally kills them all (including her brother Vijay) - Kiran is the only one to survive as she was in Jeeva's apartment. Kiran saw Devraj shoot her brother and father from Jeeva's keyhole in the front door. She faints while witnessing the shooting, but later regains her consciousness, after the police has done their job and carried the dead bodies away. Kiran calls Puri and says she can identify the shooters. A mole inspector Khan (Mahavir Shah) informs Devraj, who figures out that Kiran was hiding in a neighbor's apartment. When Kiran reaches home, she tells Jeeva that she called the police. Jeeva immediately sets fire to the apartment and escapes with Kiran. Kiran figures out that Jeeva is an assassin, and she begs Jeeva to train her. Jeeva soon finds himself taking Kiran under his wing and so, he trains her in handling weapons to get revenge against the men who had brutally murdered her family. It's not easy as Kiran insists that she will stay with Jeeva. Jeeva is unable to carry out his missions as Kiran keeps delaying him. One day she takes him shopping, one day she washes all his guns and so on. But he likes Kiran and cares for her. Madan Bhai (Veerendra Saxena) is Jeeva's friend and his handler. He figures out that Jeeva is now in love and hence not as efficient as he used to be. Slowly both Jeeva and Kiran figure out that they both love each other. Devraj launches many attempts to kill Kiran, but Jeeva is able to save her every time with his alertness. Meanwhile Puri investigates and finds that Vikas Bali was twice arrested on drug possession charges but released on Devraj's testimony to the court. Puri summons Devraj and he is alerted to Puri's investigations. Jeeva starts training Kiran so she can defend herself. Meanwhile he investigates the death of Vikas Bali and finds out that Devraj is responsible. He organizes a counterattack on Devraj, and even hits his target, but unfortunately Devraj survives. Now Kiran goes after Devraj, but he is alert and captures her. Jeeva rescues Kiran, while Devraj is away. But Devraj tortures Madan Bhai and finds where Jeeva is hiding with Kiran. Devraj attacks Jeeva with full force. Jeeva is able to get Kiran to escape through the back pipes of the apartment and sacrifices himself to kill Devraj with a lethal grenade blast. Madan Bhai meets Kiran and hands her the entire wealth that Jeeva had accumulated over the years.

Raghunath becomes a respected hit man, with Dedh Footiya as his accomplice. With Raghunath in his gang Vitthal Kaanya hits a peak in the Mumbai underworld. He is protected by a politician who uses Raghunath for his needs. While BabbanRao (Home Minister) relies on Raghunath, there are some others who despise Raghunath, and are just waiting in the sidelines to see when Raghunath makes an error. Raghunath does so, and hence becomes an embarrassment for BabbanRao. Soon Raghunath is on the run, both from the police, and BabbanRao's men. Raghunath knows now that he must protect his wife, parents, and family, as they too are in danger. Then Raghunath comes to know that the police have been ordered to kill him in an "encounter", and Raghunath now realizes that there is no escape from this harsh reality. After Anirudh lost his parents in a heavy rain-storm, he loses his senses and withdrew into himself in a catatonic state, and was hospitalized in a mental asylum. After 25 years, Anirudh recovers and is released with a certificate to prove that he is normal, from his discharging doctor. He travels to Bombay with a first class train ticket, and meets two fellows passengers, Paresh and Sunita. Although Paresh is Sunita's guardian, both are having an illicit affair. Anirudh finds Sunita very attractive, but she shuns him. Upon arrival in Bombay, Anirudh saves the life of a child during a riot, but is mistakenly arrested by the police, and lodged in a cell. After he is released, he goes to meet his mentor, Mohan, his wife, and daughter, Deepti, who have been paying for his treatment. Anirudh does not know that Mohan's motive for helping him was to take over ancestral property, and if necessary, get his daughter to marry him. Anirudh meets Sunita again, and this time she asks him to accompany him. She is now attracted to him and his charming childlike behavior. This angers her lovers, Mohan, and Ranjan, who want Anirudh out of the way by hook or by crook. When an honest school teacher testifies in a rape case against a prominent businessman's son, he is psychologically tortured and forced to commit suicide. His young son then takes the law into his own hands in order to avenge his father. His attempts to involve the police in this matter only leads to frustration; unable to witness the injustice done to his father Vishal decides to take a stand only to be thrown behind bars. The case is then called up in court and on the advice of advocate, Ashok Pradhan, Jaspal and his men decides to create such situations that Sachidanand find hard to comprehend which weakens him making him unable to explain things in the right manner; thus Pradhan is able to prove to the court that Sachidanand is mentally unfit and under intense pressure Sachidanand commit suicide. Vikram is a honest police inspector on the trail of Chimanbhai, little knowing that people behind the crimes are none other than politicians who will do anything to protect the criminals. A gangster named Shah who owes allegiance to the Janardhan gang is killed by Chimanbhai. Although Janardhan is in prison, he ensures that Chimanbhai is notified of his anger and vengeance. Chimanbhai arranges a meeting with Janardhan and kills him. Some schoolchildren and their teacher Aarti Singh, who are at a picnic nearby, witness this, but Chimanbhai and his men hunt them down and kill them all. The entire country is shocked by this killing, and the police are under pressure to apprehend the killers at any cost. Aarti's brother, Police Inspector Vikram Singh, also assists in finding the killer and gets his girlfriend Divya to pose as Aarti to lure the killers out into the open. A gangster shuns the path of crime after his lover is killed by his rivals but soon he is dragged by his boss once again in the criminal world to do one last job. At the behest of Mahesh Verma, Shanta Prasad alias Abba, recruits Ghulam-E-Musthafa, a gangster and hit-man to carry out their nefarious activities. When Dayanand Dixit refuses to sell his property to Verma, Ghulam is asked to move into their house, live with them, and eventually force them to leave. Dayanand and his wife, Bhagyalaxmi, are shocked at this and initially cannot accept a Muslim male to live together with them and eat from their utensils. To make matters worse, Dayanand loses his job, his son, Vikram, is unable to secure admission in any college, and their daughter, Vidya, is unable to get anyone to marry her. Three women in a Bihar village are sentenced to death by their menfolk. Their crime is that they dared to protest. Ketki (Madhuri Dixit), an educated young girl with dreams in her eyes, gets married into a family of upper class landlords, whose fortunes have been consumed by lethargy and extravagance. Her husband Vinay Singh (Ayub Khan) has no agricultural land left, does not have the capital to start a business, and fails to secure a job due to the governments policy of reservation for the backward castes. Ketki makes sacrifices to support him in his entrepreneurial endeavours. But fails to restrain him when, in desperation to get rich quick, he aligns with the wrong people. Contractor and power broker Tirpat (Mohan Joshi) and local politician Pandey (Harish Patel) make use of Vinay's innocence for their own profit. Vinay's degeneration is complete when he thrashes Ketki for objection to his misdeeds. Her upbringing, self-respect and righteousness make it difficult for her to bear this humiliation. She suffers. Chandravati (Shabana Azmi) is the wife of Vinay's elder brother Abhay Singh (Mohan Agashe). Greedy for the wealth and political clout of the local temple, Abhay Singh masterminds the murder of the temple head and gets himself ordained as his successor. This entails renouncing the world and deserting his wife, which he cruelly does, citing her childlessness. The truth is that Chandravati has shielded her husband's impotence for seventeen years and now suddenly finds herself in the ignominious position of an abandoned woman. The solace offered by a lower caste well wisher of the family Rambaran (Om Puri) causes unexpected problems for her. She suffers. Kanti (Shilpa Shirodkar), a low-caste labourer is exploited by the contractor to whom her husband owed money Burdened with looking after an ailing mother, while her husband is away to earn money to repay the debt, she lives in the hope that he will return, She suffers. Suffering comes naturally to women here. Regardless of caste and class, their role in the family and society is predetermined and they must never cross these limits. Several social, moral and mythological images have been created to indoctrinate women with the virtue of sacrifice and submissiveness. They must conform to these role models. However, circumstances force the women in Mrityudand to break these rules and make their own. This cannot be tolerated as the Society finds its maleness threatened, and the men, putting aside their own bloodthirsty conflicts, unite to teach the women a lesson. The three women are branded evil and sentenced to death. But when the men come to carry out the Death Sentence, there is a silent but massive rebellion which they are not prepared for.

Two Indian secret agents, Ajay and Abdul, share a brotherly bond. However, when Abdul is killed in the line of duty, the mission is handed over to Ajay, who decides to avenge his friend's death. Kajal (Karisma Kapoor) is the daughter of Prof. Sidhant Sharma (Alok Nath). Kajal is an innocent girl and always lived her life on her principles and with values taught by her father to always take stand for truth. Karan (Sunny Deol) is a criminal working for Gajraj Chaudhry (Amrish Puri). The film starts with Gajraj told by his accomplices that one journalist is writing stuff against him, so he orders Karan to kill him. Karan kills that journalist in a market full of people including Kajal and his father standing in the crowd who witnessed the whole merciless tragedy. Kajal's father reports the crime being the eyewitness, to police. When Karan got to know about the report, he enters Kajal's house and starts beating her father. In order to protect her father and stop Karan, she slaps him. For the first time, Karan notices her and gets in eye contact with her which stopped him (as he got stuck with beauty and charm in her eyes). And then Karan goes to Tulsi (Tabu), a prostitute in one brothel where he is not able to forget Kajal's eyes and in frustration leaves the brothel. Karan starts stalking her and when she is stopped by him in a temple. Kajal felt disgraced, faced her fear and without being scared, lashed out on him by criticizing his behavior and thinking that he wants to fulfill his lust for her, after listening to which Karan feels disgusted and leaves the temple. Karen's soft side is depicted where he saved one child, named Timepass, being mistreated by customers at a bar and took that child with him to his place after knowing that he is an orphan and lives on streets and works to survive which shows the reason of his present state, and why he wants to save the child from the horrors of life, and save that child's childhood which Karan had lost. After, Kajal and some other women are on a bus and are being harassed by some goons from which Karan saves them and hands over the goons to the police. After witnessing his courage and goodness in Karan to do the right thing, Kajal becomes infatuated with him and gets interested in him. Kajal becomes friends with Timepass from whom she gets to know Karan more and wants to be friends with him. She approached him through Timepass(child) and meets him regularly and in one meeting she made him realize the true value of friendship which Karan had never known because of his troublesome life. Once witnessing his terror in people she criticizes and asks for a promise to change his life for her. Karan who had never been asked to be good since his childhood, and now this girl wants to see him a changed man, teaches him true values of life, all this makes him want to be a good person. Karan leaves the criminal world to be with Kajal. Karan is now madly and passionately in love with Kajal and can't bear even the thought of losing her. One day at temple Kajal prays for his new beginning by expressing her love and promises that she won't let him be shattered again. Raju (Salman Khan), son of Kajal's father's childhood friend Ramakant Sahaye (Dalip Tahil), is enthusiastic, mischievous and flirtatious towards Kajal, and has come back from America to fulfill the desire of his parents for him to marry Kajal. Kajal does not know about this fact. She gets to know about it when she is told by his father about the marriage plans with Raju. She confessed to her father about her love for Karan and refuses to marry Raju, after listening to this and thinking about her afterlife with a goon, her father suffers a major heart attack. To save her father, being the righteous girl and thinking it is her duty towards her father, she agrees to marry Raju. Karan gets furious with this and goes to Kajal's house to beg for her love but Kajal disclaims her love and backs out and asks him to forget her and never to return. Kajal considers the circumstances that how she was helpless to be with Karan and in saving her father's life, she realizes that she should not dwell in her past and it is best now that she should accept the truth and move on. (Again, this shows her power to sacrifice her wishes to do what is morally right for her and what she is supposed to do). Kajal marries Raju. Karan fails to prevent the marriage and is upset, so he returns to a criminal lifestyle. Kajal promises to her father while bidding adieu that she will fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a wife in true and every sense. Raju and Kajal go to their honeymoon and in front of Raju's late mother's photograph, Raju confessed his passionate love for Kajal for years. With time she falls in love with Raju and they both are very happy with each other. They return to India after the honeymoon. However, she faints after overhearing Raju and his father's argument about their illegal affairs in businesses. Through a Doctor Raju gets to know that Kajal is pregnant but she is unhappy about the fact that their child will take born in an environment full of crimes and violence which she has been against all her life and criticizes his business's activities to which Raju replies that he did not know about the illegal affairs taking place, and promises to give her and their child the right environment and leaves Raju's fathers house. Because of Raju's decision, Gajraj worries about his interests in Raju's father's business thinking, Raju might become a danger to his business, and orders Karan to kill Raju. Karan who is unknown about Raju's reality goes to his house to kill him and there he comes across Kajal and finds out that Raju is the husband of Kajal. Kajal after seeing the old Karan in her house gets scared about his return in her life fearing that Karan is after her happy life now. Instead, Karan is on to the purpose of saving Raju now for Kajal's sake. One day after being rescued by Karan from goons Raju (who is unconscious) is taken to his house and where Kajal apologizes to Karan for her deeds with him which is overheard by Raju. Raju tells both Kajal and Karan about his discovery of their past. Raju very wisely understands and tackles the whole situation and conveys his thoughts about destiny's plays and its tricks in their lives that humans are helpless against destiny, but he believes in love and says love is the essence which connects people and that he respects Kajal and Karan's past and praises Kajal's fulfillment of her 'dharma' towards him and says that he will name their child Karan if it's a boy. Then suddenly Raju, Kajal, and Karan are attacked by Gajraj's goons and in escaping the house under attack Kajal suffers labor pains. Karan notices that and takes Raju and Kajal to a safe place. He reaches the brothel and asks Tulsi to help Kajal deliver the child safely. Goons chase them to the brothel where Karan and Raju indulge in a fight with the goons. At one point where Gajaraj is about to shoot Raju, Karan comes in between and takes the shots. Karan dies at the moment when Kajal delivers her baby. and the film ends with Raju holding their son whom Kajal calls with the name 'Karan'.
